ARLINGTON, Texas – Northeastern (2-4, 0-0 CAA) rebounded well from a Friday collapse with a 4-0 shutout win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader with UT Arlington (5-2, 0-0 WAC), but the Mavericks repaid the favor and claimed the series with a 6-0 win in the second game of the twinbill at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Game 1: NU 4, UTA 0
Sophomore
Nick Berger (1-1, 2.45 ERA) got the start and earned a seven-inning complete-game shutout of UT Arlington, allowing just five hits in his outing.
Jason Vosler (2-for-4) and
Pete Castoldi (1-for-3) drove in two runs apiece on the day to total the Huskies' offense in the 4-0 win over the Mavericks.
After leadoff man
Aaron Barbosa was walked on five pitches to start things off in the first,
Michael Foster hit into a fielder's choice for the day's first out. Vosler subsequently continued his recent success with a second-pitch single to right field, scoring Foster, who stole second on the previous pitch.
The two teams held each other scoreless after the first until NU struck once again in the fourth inning.
Connor Lyons reached safely on an infield single to second base, followed by a
Will Dougherty single to put runners at first and second. After
Josh Treff flied out to center,
Pete Castoldi lined a double to left-center field, scoring both Dougherty and Castoldi in one fell swoop, which put the Huskies up 3-0.
Berger allowed a single to right in the fourth, but a fielder's choice and a nice 6-4-3 double play ended the inning with the Red and Black unscathed yet again. Into the last inning, the Huskies drove in an insurance run, thanks to a Vosler single, which scored Foster, who was sitting on second after a wild pitch put him in scoring position.
Game 2: UTA 6, NU 0
Northeastern's offense was limited in game two, and the Huskies could only muster two hits through the first seven innings off UTA starter Brad Vachon. Senior
Kevin Ferguson (1-1, 5.07 ERA) earned the loss on the mound, putting in 4.2 innings of work, giving up 10 hits and five runs, all of which were earned. Ferguson did strikeout four Mavericks during his stint.
UTA threatened in the first inning, but put their first run on the board in the bottom of the second, thanks to a walk followed by back-to-back singles by Daniel Garcia and Brandon Lawrence through the left side of the field. The Mavericks scored again in the fourth, with a two-RBI single from Ryan Walker, who plunked the ball into center field, and twice more in the fifth with a two-RBI double coming from Garcia, giving the home club a 5-0 lead through five.
Arlington piled on one more with a two-out run in the sixth when Darien McLemore doubled to right center, scoring Copeland, who just stole third. In the last three innings, the Huskies grabbed hits from Barbosa,
R.J. Roman and
Brad Burcroff, but it was to no avail as the Mavericks took a final 6-0 tally.
Northeastern returns to the diamond back in the Sunshine State, at the 2013 Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla., starting March 1. While in Florida, the Huskies will face Chicago St., Western Michigan, Valparaiso, St. Bonaventure and Villanova in the week-long trip.
