NORFOLK, Va. – Senior Kevin Ferguson held Old Dominion scoreless for more than seven innings, and Northeastern used hits from six different batters to come away with a gritty, 2-1 win over the Monarchs on Sunday afternoon. Michael Foster (1-for-5, 1RBI) and Pete Castoldi (1-for-3, 1RBI) drove in both of NU's runs, moving the Huskies to 8-6 (1-2 CAA) on the year.

Ferguson struck out two and walked three in 7.2 innings of work to earn the win, improving his record to 3-1 this season. Senior co-captain Dylan Maki picked up his third save of the year after striking out one and holding ODU to just one hit in 1.1 innings.

Both teams battled to a scoreless fifth inning, where Northeastern took advantage of some ODU mistakes. Connor Lyons (0-for-3, 1R) reached on an error and then moved to third after a John Puttress (1-for-3) single through the left side. That's when Castoldi brought home the game's first run, scoring Lyons off a single shot to third base.

In the top of the seventh inning, R.J. Roman started the Huskies off on the right track again with a single to short. Will Dougherty came into pinch run for Roman and was immediately moved into scoring position thanks to a Castoldi sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Michael Foster smacked a double to right field, sending Dougherty home for a tenuous, 2-0 lead for the Huskies.

But the combination of Ferguson and Maki frustrated the Monarch bats, who were held to just three hits in the final four innings. The bottom of the eighth gave ODU its only run of the day after a Ben Verlander RBI single, but the Monarchs couldn't get anything else going, falling to the Huskies, 2-1.

Northeastern finally returns to Boston for a mid-week showdown with Brown at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Friedman Diamond.
