FAIRFAX, Va. – Northeastern's
Kevin Ferguson struck out seven in 6.2 innings of work, but George Mason edged out a 3-2 victory on Sunday to take the series over the Huskies. NU's
John Puttress and
Pete Castoldi both drove runs home for the Huskies, but the Patriots scored a run in the eighth inning to hold off a Northeastern attack.
Much like Saturday's showdown
, both pitchers held the offenses in check for much of the afternoon. Ferguson gave up just two runs on eight hits for Northeastern while GMU's Jake Kalish yielded just six hits in seven innings, while striking out two. Mason drew first blood early in the first after back-to-back hits, which brought Vitaletti home to make things 1-0.
In the second inning, Brad Burcroff singled and Connor Lyons followed quickly with a single of his own to put runners at the corners. A John Puttress sacrifice fly quickly tied things at 1-1 heading into the third inning. But in the sixth inning, Mason struck again. Two back-to-back singles and a sac fly briefly made things 2-1 in the Patriots' favor, but Pete Castoldi tied things up with an RBI double to bring Puttress home in the top of the seventh inning.
After Dylan Maki came in to replace Ferguson, however, Mason had a quick flash of luck with an Evans home run in the bottom of the eighth, which eventually proved to be the final score of the game, as Mason took the series with a 3-2 Sunday win.
Northeastern returns to the field on Wednesday with yet another home game against the BC Eagles. First pitch for Wednesday is set for 3 p.m.
