BROOKLINE, Mass. – Northeastern's top-notch pitching staff held William & Mary to just two hits Friday afternoon at Friedman Diamond, but the Tribe (14-8, 3-1 CAA) needed just one of those base knocks to bring home the game's only run in a 1-0 win over the Huskies (10-9, 2-5 CAA) in the first game of the series.

NU's Nick Cubarney pitched well, going 5.2 innings, striking out three and walking three, but W&M's Brett Koehler went the distance for the Tribe, pitching 9.0 shutout innings to earn the win. At the plate, both Aaron Barbosa (2-for-4) and Jason Vosler (2-for-4) grabbed two hits apiece to lead the offense, but no Husky was able to stay in scoring position on the day. Defensively, however, the Huskies shined against the Tribe. Michael Foster, Connor Lyons and Brad Burcroff each had highlight-reel plays to prevent any further damage on the scoreboard.

The CAA's second- and third-best pitching staffs went at it as expected. Through four complete innings, neither Cubarney nor Koehler saw more than four batters per frame, preventing a single runner to touch third base in that span. William & Mary, however, fed off an error in the top of the fifth inning, which led to the game's only run. Lowe singled through the left side following the error and a walk, which brought Hissey across the plate to make it 1-0 in W&M's favor.

After a quick walk in the visitor half of the next inning, Cubarney walked another batter, but even more quickly got two to ground out in the inning. Brad McLean came on in relief of his fellow classmate with a runner on third base, and eventually retired the side to keep the Tribe from adding any more runs.

McLean did well to keep W&M at bay in the next inning, taking two three-pitch strikeouts into the bottom of the eighth, but the Huskies' offense couldn't muster up the extra-base hits that they needed to put runners into scoring positions. Koehler pitched lights out to retire NU's last nine batters in a row to end the game in the Tribe's favor, 1-0.

The two CAA foes will continue action tomorrow with the second game of the series, which is set for a 1 p.m. first-pitch.
