BROOKLINE, Mass. – In a testament to both teams' starting pitchers, Northeastern and William & Mary combined for just eight hits on Saturday, but it was the Tribe (15-8, 4-1 CAA) again who came away with a slim, 1-0 victory over the Huskies (10-10, 2-6 CAA) at Friedman Diamond.
NU's
Nick Berger and W&M's ace John Farrell both went the distance, each allowing just four hits apiece. Aside from the Tribe's lone run coming across in the sixth inning, Berger baffled William & Mary for the most part, especially in the fifth, where the sophomore Husky threw just three pitches to record three outs. Berger finished the game with three strikeouts to just one walk. Farrell ended his afternoon striking out seven and walking two to earn the complete-game shutout victory.
Neither side posed any real threat at the plate to the opposition until the sixth inning. In the top of the frame, William & Mary used a leadoff single from Derek Lowe to kick off a three-hit inning for the Tribe. After Lowe advanced a bag, Ryan Brown used a base knock to send the senior home for the game's only run.
Jason Vosler made a brilliant stop to keep the ball from rolling into the outfield, but a long throw just missed from getting Brown at first for out number two. With good awareness, Lowe rounded third and took home with a bang-bang play at the plate where he was called safe.
The Huskies put together some offense in the home half of the inning to threaten.
Aaron Barbosa (2-for-3) earned his second hit of the day and promptly stole second (one of two for the junior on the afternoon). After Vosler (0-for-3) was intentionally walked, Burcroff nearly sent Barbosa home with a deep ball to center, but Brown was there to end the inning.
Connor Lyons (1-for-4) led off the seventh inning with a big double to center, and quickly advanced to third thanks to a sacrifice bunt from
John Puttress (0-for-2). But after Lowe caught a deep ball in right sent to him by catcher
Josh Treff (0-for-3), the W&M right fielder threw a line to home where Lyons was called out trying to tag, thus ending NU's best chance at a run.
In a fitting end to yet another pitcher's duel, the last three batters from either side were retired in order, giving William & Mary its second 1-0 win over Northeastern to take the series. Game three will take place tomorrow at 1 p.m.
