BROOKLINE, Mass. – Northeastern's
Kevin Ferguson went 8.0 innings, striking out a season-high nine batters, but William & Mary escaped with the series sweep by yet another 1-0 margin on Sunday. Pitching for the Tribe (16-8, 5-1 CAA), Jason Inghram held the Huskies (10-11, 2-7 CAA) scoreless with just four hits while striking out nine on the day to earn the win.
Once again, hits and runs came at a premium between the two clubs, and both sides' pitchers did well to concede just four base runners combined through five innings. Ferguson allowed just a single hit during that time span, but it came in the third inning when the senior earned three of his nine strikeouts to retire the side. Ferguson also did well in his stint corralling the ball, assisting on seven outs in the infield.
Connor Lyons (1-for-3) opened up a potential scoring threat with a good look at the plate for the Huskies early on, blasting a double to the center field wall to start off the second inning, but Ryan Brown threw a rocket to third to catch Lyons attempting to turn it into a triple. It wasn't until the sixth inning that the Huskies looked to be in good position to score again. After
Michael Foster (1-for-3) connected for his sixth double of the season,
John Puttress flied out to left to put the sophomore on third. But Inghram caught
Jason Vosler looking to end the inning unscathed.
In the eighth inning, the Tribe finally reeled off some hits of their own, and they made them count. After Charley Gould singled through the right side for the Tribe's third hit of the game, Jonathan Sarty barely avoided grounding into a double play to end the frame by beating out a throw to first after a fielder's choice got the runner out at second. Derek Lowe reached safely in the next at bat, but an errant throw moved Sarty to third with two outs. W&M's leadoff hitter, Ryan Lindemuth, drove home what would be the game's winning run with a single to center field to bring Sarty home.
Dylan Maki came on for the Huskies in the ninth inning, striking out a batter, but just like the day before, William & Mary was able to retire the final six Huskies in a row to end with a 1-0 advantage. Northeastern quickly returns to the diamond to face Central Connecticut State Monday afternoon.
