NORFOLK, Va. – Northeastern attempted a rally in the late innings of Saturday's game at Old Dominion, scoring four runs in the top of the eighth inning alone, but he Huskies (7-6, 0-2 CAA) ultimately fell to the Monarchs, 10-8, thanks to a three home run, seven-RBI day from Ben Verlander.

Both sides entered the bottom of the fourth scoreless, but that's when Verlander made things difficult for Northeastern, driving home four with a grand slam to left center field off of starting pitcher, Nick Berger (5.0 IP, 8H, 7R, 2K, 3BB). NU got a run back in the next frame when Rob Fonseca (2-for-4, 1 HR, 3R, 3RBI) sent a solo shot down the left field line for his first of the year, but an RBI single from Ben Slaton made things 5-1 heading into the sixth.

Brad Burcroff (2-for-4, 2R, 1RBI) drove another run in for the Huskies , pushing Aaron Barbosa (1-for-5, 1R, 1RBI) across the plate in the top of the sixth, but Verlander negated the run as he led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to make things 6-2. After Isaac Lippert (3.0IP, 5H, 3R, 3K, 1BB) was called in for Berger on the mound, ODU didn't let up, as Austin McGowan singled to center to bring home two more Monarchs.

John Puttress (2-for-4, 2R, 1RBI) led off a Huskies two-run seventh inning with a single. The catcher made his way around the bases, eventually scoring off a Pete Castoldi ground out. Barbosa subsequently singled, plating Fonseca, who had reached on a fielder's choice to make it 8-4 in the Monarchs' favor.

But Verlander made things difficult once again, going yard for the third time in the game, this time with a two-RBI  shot to left center. With a 10-4 deficit heading into the eighth, however, Northeastern never gave up. After a Burcroff walk and a Connor Lyons (3-for-5, 1R) single, Puttress singled home another run to start the inning with no outs. Fonseca then drove home his third RBI of the day with a two-run double to left. Castoldi followed by sending the Husky first baseman home to make it 10-8, but that would be all for the Red and Black, as NU fell by the same score an inning later.

Northeastern and ODU will meet again Sunday for a 1 p.m. game at Bud Metheny Complex.
