RICHMOND, Va. – Northeastern mounted a tenacious comeback, amassing seven runs in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to one, but ultimately the Richmond Spiders (22-10, 6-3 A10) held on for the series opening win over the Huskies (20-14, 7-8 CAA) at Pitt Field on Friday afternoon, 11-10.

The Huskies'  furious rally in the late stages started with a three-run home run from sophomore Michael Foster (1-for-3, HR, 2R, 3RBI), his second blast of the season. Jason Vosler (2-for-4, 1R, 1RBI), Rob Fonseca (1-for-5) and Connor Lyons (2-for-4, 2R) earned singles before Foster's home run, starting a string of seven consecutive hits in the inning for NU. In total, eight Huskies got on base before the first out, which coincidentally came from Vosler who started the frame, on a sacrifice fly.

But the Richmond offense, which came into the weekend with a potential to explode, showed its dominance early, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the first inning. A leadoff walk kicked off a streak of six consecutive base runners for UR, and one final single in the inning with two outs put Northeastern in a 5-0 hole early.

But the Husky offense, kept fighting in top open the second inning. Lyons drew a leadoff walk, followed by Foster who did the same. John Puttress (2-for-5, 2R, 1RBI) took advantage with runners on and plated Lyons during the next at bat with a single to center to give the Huskies a much-needed run. Pete Castoldi (2-for-4, 1R, 3RBI) doubled to right center field, scoring two more in the frame to make it a reasonable 5-3.

From there until the eighth, however, Richmond took over. The Spiders plated runs in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings, eventually taking a seemingly insurmountable 11-3 lead.

The Huskies slugged 15 hits in the contest, eight of which came in the late stages of the game. On the mound, freshman Nick Cubarney (3-3), got the call for the start, but lasted just an inning, allowing the five runs. Matt Cook came on in relief, throwing four innings, giving up four funs over that span. Freshman Matt Goreham made his second appearance of the year, tossing two innings, giving up two hits and two runs to Richmond. Fellow classmate Brad McLean closed out the ballgame, pitching the final inning.

The two clubs will meet tomorrow as the Huskies try to even the series at 2 p.m.
