RICHMOND, Va. – Northeastern held a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but a five-run frame vaulted Richmond (23-11, 6-3 A10) past the Huskies (21-15, 7-8 CAA), 5-4, to claim the series on Sunday at Pitt Field.
Both starters, NU's
Kevin Ferguson and UR's Jacob Mayers, held strong until the Huskies dented the scoreboard first in the top of the third.
Aaron Barbosa knocked a one-out single to left center and came around to score after a
Jason Vosler double.
Rob Fonseca made things 2-0 in the Huskies' favor, slugging a double of his own, scoring Vosler from second.
The Huskies added another run in the next inning after
Michael Foster came home before the final out was recorded on a fielder's choice. Ferguson, on the other hand, was dicing through the Spiders' lineup, earning six strikeouts through seven frames.
In the top of the sixth,
John Puttress plated
Connor Lyons after Lyons lead off the inning with a double to right. The score put Northeastern ahead, 4-0, which carried into the ninth, but in the bottom of the last stanza, the Spiders used four consecutive hits and a hit-by-pitch to tie things up. With two outs, however, Mayers, who got the call on the mound, snuck one through the left side for a game-winning single, putting the Spiders up for good, 5-4, taking the series in the process.
The Huskies return to the diamond Wednesday when Northeastern visits Fairfield at 3 p.m.
