Next Game Sunday, April 28 vs. Georgia State (Brookline, Mass.), 11 a.m.

BROOKLINE, Mass. – After an emotional extra-innings contest on Friday, Northeastern and Georgia State battled in a tough game once again on Saturday afternoon, but it was the Panthers (28-17, 7-10 CAA) who came away with a 6-0 shutout win over the Huskies (23-16, 8-9 CAA). Despite a two-hit performance from Jason Vosler (2-for-4), NU was out-matched at the plate, as GSU pounded out 12 hits off Husky hurlers on the afternoon.

Nick Berger (4-5, 3.21 ERA) earned his 10th start of the season, going seven strong innings, but the sophomore gave up three earned on 10 hits and four strikeouts to earn the loss. For the third time this year, Berger did not issue a single walk in the game.

Small ball was the name of the game for much of the day on Saturday for the Panthers, who finally capitalized and were the first to dent the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. After Caden Bailey was struck at the plate to lead off the inning, he made his way all the way around the horn, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Matt Rose to make it 1-0. After the Huskies were retired 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the frame, GSU added another run in the fifth off a Chase Raffield double, plating Josh Merrigan for a 2-0 lead.

Raffield drove in another run off a sacrifice in the top of the seventh inning to make it 3-0, but then in the ninth, the Panthers put things away. After co-captain Chris Carmain made his first appearance since March 1, the Panthers pounced. Carmain retired the first three batters he saw in the eighth, but after a Raffield RBI single, Nic Wilson belted a deep ball over the left field fence to extend the visitor's lead to 6-0, where it would remain after Jerry Stuckey closed things out, retiring the Huskies in order to end the ballgame.

The two clubs will return to the diamond for an early, 11 a.m. Sunday rubbermatch to determine the series.
