BROOKLINE, Mass. – Both Northeastern and Hofstra entered the weekend on a hot streak, but it was the Pride (14-16, 4-6 CAA) who came away with the first win of the series, downing the Huskies (16-13, 5-8 CAA) at Friedman Diamond on Friday. Northeastern scored two quick runs in the first inning, but Hofstra used four runs in the fourth to run away with a 9-2 victory.

Nick Cubarney earned just his second loss on the season after getting the Friday start. The freshman finished the day going four complete innings, giving up four hits and four runs (two unearned), walking three and striking three out. Brad Burcroff led the charge at the dish, going 4-for-5 with a run scored and on run batted in.

After Cubarney got out of the top half of the first with just seven pitches, the Huskies pounced at the plate. Immediately after Aaron Barbosa (1-for-3, 1R) was hit by a pitch to lead off, Burcroff sent him running home with a line-drive triple to center. Jason Vosler (1-for-4, 1RBI) earned his team-best 24th RBI on the year the very next at bat, sending  Burcroff across to give the Huskies an early 2-0 lead.

In the second, NU grabbed a walk and two two-out singles from Pete Castoldi (1-for-4) and Burcroff, but a final grounder would end the inning for David D'Errico with no further damage done. But after two innings of both teams, Hofstra was able to do some damage on offense. Cubarney got Kenny Jackson to fly out on a deep ball to center, but the Pride drew three straight walks off the freshman pitcher. Two errors and a single allowed Hofstra to put four runs on the board, the most the Huskies have allowed in one inning in 16 games. A nice play from Barbosa to in right to fire a laser to John Puttress at home, however, brought a welcomed end to the top of the fourth frame.

Matt Cook came on in relief in the fifth, retiring the side, earning two strikeouts in the process, but the Pride backed up their solid pitching with another run in the sixth to push the lead to 5-2. D'Errico frustrated the Husky bats for four consecutive innings, retiring 14 batters in a row and 15 of 17 through seven innings and some change to keep the Red and Black at bay.

Joe Perez led off the eighth with a shot to deep center field, but Connor Lyons sparked the Huskies in the field by saving what could have been an easy triple with a leaping catch near the wall. Cook finished things off with his fourth strikeout of the afternoon, freezing Ehrsam at the plate to end the inning.

But the Pride tacked on three more runs in the visiting half of the ninth, thanks to a walk and two hit batters, who came home off singles and a fielder's choice to make the final tally, 9-2 in Hofstra's favor.

The two clubs are back in action Saturday for a 1 p.m. start at Friedman Diamond.
