BROOKLINE, Mass. – Delaware used two home runs for a four-run fourth to vault its way to a 6-1 victory over Northeastern on Friday at Friedman Diamond. The Huskies (25-22, 9-13 CAA) dropped their third straight game while the Blue Hens (31-17, 13-9 CAA) improved their third-place CAA standing with the win.
Freshman
James Mulry, who entered the day allowing no earned runs in 21.0 innings of work in the comforts of home in Brookline, got the call and started off strong while giving up just two hits through three innings before the Delaware bats got hot.
Michael Foster had a day at the plate for the Huskies, pounding out three hits in his four at-bats in the loss to Chad Kuhl, the Blue Hens' hurler who went the distance and gave up eight base hits, striking out seven.
The story for Northeastern early on was their strong play in the field. After allowing a one-out walk to Tyler Powell in the first, Mulry got Jimmy Yezzo swinging before
John Puttress nailed Powell at second for the strike 'em out, throw 'em out double-play.
The Huskies earned the game's first run in the second. Fonseca led off with a shot up the middle and Foster followed with a single to put runners on first and second with no outs. With one out, Castoldi hit a soft grounder to third, but the throw to first sailed wide of the bag, allowing Fonseca to score for the game's first run. After two, the Huskies led 1-0.
Mulry started strong from the hill, reaching the third inning before allowing a hit to a Delaware lineup that entered the contest 9th in the nation with a .314 team batting average.
Defense was clutch again for the Huskies in the top of the third. With men on first and second, the Blue Hens' D.J. Long sent a drive to the 370 ft. marker in left-center field.
Sean Lyons was able to track it down, and with a relay throw from
Jason Vosler, Northeastern was able to catch the runner at first for their second double-play of the day.
Delaware flexed its muscles at the plate in the top of the fourth. Following a Northeastern error, Yezzo laced a long double that short-hopped the wall in right field. With runners on second and third and no outs, Nick Ferdinand launched his 10th home run of the season to left field.
Delaware tacked on a run in the sixth. Lopes reached on an infield single with men on first and second. Ferdinand broke for home on the play, and reached safely for a 5-1 Delaware lead.
Mulry was able to respond with a pair outs before Zach Lopes sent his second home run of the year into the Delaware bullpen to put the Blue Hens on top, 4-1, midway through the fourth. UD added an insurance run off Mulry in the sixth after a single to the mound and an error brought home Stoltzfus to make it 5-1.
Brad McLean replaced his fellow classmate an inning later, and finished the game giving up just one earned (on a sacrifice fly in the eighth) on four hits in 3.0 innings of work.
The Huskies and Blue Hens return to Friedman for the middle game of the series tomorrow to a new time,
