BROOKLINE, Mass. – Northeastern pounced on Delaware early on Senior Day and Alumni Day, scoring twice in the first inning, as the Huskies (26-22, 10-13 CAA) edged out the Blue Hens (31-18, 13-10 CAA), 3-1, in a rain-soaked contest at Friedman Diamond on Saturday.
Sophomore
Nick Berger, making his 12th start of the year, pitched lights out for much of 8.0 innings, allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out seven and yielding just three walks.
Michael Foster came on in relief for the games final inning, fanning a pair to earn the save -- his second this season.
At the plate, three Huskies --
Aaron Barbosa,
Rob Fonseca and
Sean Lyons -- grabbed two hits apiece, while
Brad Burcroff sent his third long shot over the wall in the eighth inning.
Once again, the Huskies made an effort to jump out early on the Blue Hens. Leadoff man
Aaron Barbosa sent a line through the right side of the field to open things up. Senior catcher
John Puttress followed up, reaching on an error by D.J. Long to put two on early.
Rob Fonseca made UD's Adam Davis pay in the next at-bat, sending a shot down the left field line, scoring both runners for a much-needed 2-0 lead in the first.
Davis settled in after the second, keeping the Huskies at bay, thanks in part to solid defense behind him. Berger, however, flew through the Hens' lineup in the first three innings, retiring nine of 10 batters with four strikeouts during that span.
Delaware cut its deficit to one run in the fourth after Berger plunked Stoltzfus, who came around to score on a Zach Lopes single, but thanks to Berger's effort on the mound, the Huskies kept their feet steady with the lead.
Burcroff added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, launching his third home run of the season -- second at Friedman Diamond -- into the right field bleachers to give the Huskies their final 3-1 lead, evening the crucial conference series at one game apiece.
The two clubs will play the rubber game Sunday at 12 p.m., the Huskies' final home contest of the season.
