TOWSON, Md. – Northeastern's
Michael Foster was 2-for-3 with an RBI on the afternoon at the plate, but Towson held the upper hand, dealing the Huskies a 14-1 loss at John B. Schuerholz Park. Led by Kurt Wertz, the Tigers accumulated a total of nine runs off four home runs on the day.
Towson jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over Northeastern in the bottom of the first, thanks to a pair of long balls from Pat Fitzgerald and Patrick Bowles, setting the tempo at the plate for the day. Freshman
James Mulry made his seventh start, but was pulled after just 2.1 innings of work.
Isaac Lippert came on in relief, striking out four batters over 3.2 innings. But the Tigers never let up, scoring five runs on the sophomore over that span. In the fourth inning, down 8-0, Northeastern dented the scoreboard. After
Brad Burcroff singled to left, Foster sent him home with a single of his own, slicing into the deficit.
But an inning later, Towson extended its lead to 11 with a grand slam from Wertz, after a pair of walks and a single from the Tigers' bats. TU added two more in the bottom of the seventh to make things 14-1, eventually taking the first game of the series by the same margin.
The two squads will meet on Friday as Northeastern aims to even the series and claim a spot in the CAA Tournament.
