2013 U.S. Open Cup Bracket
BOSTON – Northeastern men's soccer rising senior
Dante Marini is preparing for his final season with the Huskies against some of the world's top young talent. Marini, playing with Reading United AC of the United Soccer Leagues' Professional Development League, is taking part in the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and will square off with the New York Red Bulls (MLS) on Wednesday night.
The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest ongoing cup competition in United States Soccer, which pits a wide array of United States Soccer Federation affiliated teams, ranging from amateur adult club teams to professional Major League Soccer clubs. Reading United earned an amateur team record fifth consecutive berth in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 thanks to a second place finish in the Mid-Atlantic Division of the Premier Development League last season, and will join 15 other clubs from the Premier Development League in this year's tournament.
United reached the Third Round of the 100th U.S. Open Cup thanks to a historic 1-0 victory over Harrisburg City Islanders, a fellow Philadelphia Union affiliate, last week. The victory marked the squad's first against a professional opponent in U.S. Open Cup play and set up a meeting with the Red Bulls.
Marini has played in three matches so far this season for United, and is tied for third on the team with five points (two goals, one assists) in 150 minutes played. He is coming off a 2012 campaign with the Huskies that saw the tri-captain log one goal and five assists, including the game-winning header against Boston College in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
NU alum and current Philadelphia Union (MLS) defender
Don Anding is also taking part in the U.S. Open Cup, and will play the Ocean City Nor'Easters (USL PDL) on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
