WILMINGTON, N.C. – Northeastern sophomore
Nick Berger's complete-game two-hitter proved to be the key to the Huskies' (25-19, 9-11 CAA) victory over UNCW on Saturday at Brooks Field.
Jason Vosler scored the game's only run in the top of the ninth inning as NU evened the series with the 1-0 win over the Seahawks (33-14, 14-5 CAA).
Saturday was a pitcher's duel to the core between Berger and UNCW's Jordan Ramsey. Through the first six innings, all but two halves of a frame (the top of the second and bottom of the third) were 1-2-3 innings for each hurler on the mound. Ramsey allowed seven hits to the Huskies, two each coming from
Aaron Barbosa and
Rob Fonseca. The latter of Fonseca's base knocks proved to be the winning RBI, as the sophomore first baseman sent his classmate home, following a Vosler double to the right field gap to open up the top of the ninth inning.
That's not to say either team didn't have their chances, however. Twice did Northeastern put men on second and third in an inning, but Ramsey held firm on the mound to prevent any early runs. UNCW, however, had just three men on second base the entire day, but nice heads-up plays out of Berger and
Sean Lyons -- filling in for
Connor Lyons in center field -- prevented any Seahawks from safely reaching third base the entire day. To help his cause, Berger tossed two strikeouts, but on the flip side, Ramsey got six Huskies down on three strikes.
Northeastern and UNCW will return to the diamond tomorrow morning for an 11 a.m. start at Brooks Field for the rubber game.
