WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Northeastern and Hartford battled until the final inning of the Tuesday matinee, but it was the Hawks (15-31, 11-13 AEC) who buzzed the Huskies (25-21, 9-12 CAA) in a quick, 2-1 contest at Fiondella Field.
Aaron Barbosa led the way at the dish for the Huskies, going 2-for-4, scoring NU's lone run of the afternoon. Tuesday marked the fifth consecutive game Barbosa recorded a multi-hit performance; he leads the team with 18 multi-hit games this season.
Freshman
Nick Cubarney got the call for the Huskies, going 6.1 innings, giving up just one run on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks issued.
Matt Cook came on in relief in the seventh with runners on second and third with just one out, and held firm until the bottom of the final frame. But that's when Lukach singled home the game's winning run with a blooper to left center.
Barbosa came home in the first inning to score the game's first run after grabbing a leadoff infield single to the mound. The junior made his way to second on an error from Mannuccia, and eventually came all the way around after a ground out by
Jason Vosler. Hartford tied the game quickly in that same inning, thanks to three consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly to open the Hawks' first stanza.
Each club's pitching staff worked quickly through the bulk of the game, allowing few chances to their opponent. The Huskies retired the Hawks in order six out of nine innings, while the Huskies were retired in order four times on the opposite side. But Hartford was able to hit when it counted, eventually scoring a walk-off win on its seventh hit of the afternoon in the game's final at-bat to claim a 2-1 victory.
The Huskies get back to work this weekend, welcoming in Delaware for NU's final home series of the season. Saturday will be Senior Day for five Huskies.
