DURHAM, N.H. – Despite taking a 1-0 advantage less than 10 minutes into the game, the Northeastern field hockey team (3-2) surrendered three straight goals midway through the first half as New Hampshire knocked off the Huskies on Sunday afternoon, 3-1.
Natalie Stewart had the lone goal of the day for the Huskies, while
Becky Garner made five saves in goal. UNH outshot Northeastern 11-6 during the game and held an 8-3 edge in corner opportunities
Northeastern jumped out to an early lead in the ninth minute of the contest when Stewart netted her second goal in as many games when she dribbled down the middle of the circle before lifting a shot over UNH goalkeeper Carlie Tarbell from eight yards out for a 1-0 NU lead.
The Wildcats, however, answered with three straight tallies in 10 minutes to take a 3-1 lead. The first came with 13:52 left in the first half when Melyssa Woods netted her first goal of the season on a shot inside the right post and past Garner.
UNH then took its first lead of the day as Chandler Giese fed Hannah Richard with a pass in the circle before Richard redirected a shot to beat Garner for her third goal of the year. The Wildcats went up by two goals with less than four minutes left in the first half when Richard scored again on another redirect from Meg Flatley for a 3-1 New Hampshire lead.
Northeastern attempted to cut into the deficit during the second half, but Tarbell and the Wildcats kept the Huskies at bay. NU's best chance during the final 35 minutes came midway through the second as
Emmy Zweserijn took a long pass from
Kelly Dunn in the circle, but her shot went just wide.
The Huskies will be back in action next week when Northeastern travels to Louisville, Ky. to take on Michigan State on Friday at 4 p.m.
