BROOKLINE, Mass. – Dante Marini's second goal of the season and two saves from Dylan Faber was not enough as Columbia scored once in the first half and again in the second to down the Northeastern men's soccer team (2-3-2) on Saturday night at Parsons Field.

NU outshot the Lions 12-8 during the match, including a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Northeastern also had a 9-2 advantage in corners, and a 5-0 edge in the second half.

Columbia started the match on the offensive, converting on its lone shot of the first half to take a 1-0 advantage eight minutes in. After receiving a pass from Andrew Tinari, David Najem walked into the box before sending a chip shot over Faber and into the right side of the net for his team leading fourth goal of the season.

The Huskies would come alive following the goal, outshooting the Lions 5-1 during the period, including a 2-1 edge in shots on goal. Marini would level the score at one aside in the 34th minute of play when he took a pass from Conner Alexander and threaded a low shot from 20 yards out inside the left post for his second goal of the year.

Minutes later, the Huskies made a bid for a 2-1 edge when Jonathan Eckford took a Marini pass before trying to send the ball into the box from the left side, but it was blocked by a Lion defender.

The NU defense would keep Columbia quiet throughout the remainder of the period thanks to key efforts from Ambry Moss in the box, stealing the ball off the foot of Jack Gagne and transitioning the other way.

Northeastern came out of intermission looking to build on the momentum gained from Marini's goal, and almost went up by one in the 49th minute when Marc Greenblatt flicked a ball into the box off a throw in from Mike Lobben, but the Huskies couldn't control.

Ten minutes later, Columbia retook the lead on a goal from Will Stamatis. After Faber turned aside a shot from David Westlake from the left side, the rebound popped right out to Stamatis, who finished it off for his first goal of the season.

Alexander nearly netted his first goal of the season in the 61st minute when he took a long pass, ran through two defenders and fired a shot on goal that Jackson saved. Eckford had a scoring chance of his own seconds later on a shot from the left that Jackson also handled.

Christian McKenna tried to even the score once again in the 77th minute when he took a flick from Alexander before sending a shot on goal that Jackson easily controlled. Late in the match, Simon Cox made a last ditch effort for the Huskies with a header off a corner by Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave, but the ball sailed just over the crossbar.

The Huskies will be back in action on Tuesday when Northeastern travels to Worcester, Mass. for a 7 p.m. showdown with Holy Cross.
