CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Junior goaltender
Chloe Desjardins (Saint-Prosper, Quebec) made a career-high 40 saves as the Northeastern women's hockey team (7-11-2, 3-5-2 HEA) skated to a 1-1 tie against No. 7 Boston College on Saturday at Conte Forum.
Freshman
Hayley Scamurra (Williamsville, N.Y.) scored the Huskies' lone goal and fired seven shots for the second straight game. Haley Skarupa netted her 14th goal of the season for the Eagles (13-4-3, 8-1-1 HEA), who were held without a win for just the second time in 10 Hockey East games.
Boston College netminder Corinne Boyles matched Desjardins with a stellar effort as well, turning aside 39 Northeastern shots, including eight in overtime. Boyles was beaten four times in the game, but three NU shots hit the post and stayed out.
The Huskies first struck the iron early in the first period when sophomore
Paige Savage (Johns Creek, Ga.) fooled Boyles on a breakaway, but her attempt clanged off the pipe and skittered wide.
Northeastern continued to throw pucks at the net and eventually found a breakthrough at the 13:28 mark when Scamurra dug out a loose puck at the top of the left circle and sniped a wrister into the top right corner of the net to make it 1-0. The goal was Scamurra's third of the season and extended the freshman's point-streak to four games.
The lead lasted just 1:37 as the Eagles tied the score at one on a power-play strike just six seconds into the man-advantage. Off a faceoff win in the Huskies' zone, BC's Kate Leary collected the disk in the right corner and delivered a backhand feed to a cutting Skarupa, who lifted a quick wrister over the blocker of Desjardins from the low slot.
Northeastern generated the majority of the chances in the middle period and nearly regained the lead five minutes into the frame when freshman
Heather Mottau (Milton, Mass.) was denied by Boyles on a shorthanded bid from the right wing. Later in the frame, Savage was stymied once again by the iron as her follow-up shot from the left circle struck the post on the power play.
The Eagles' attack finally gained some steam with a power-play opportunity late in the second, but Desjardins came to the rescue with several big stops, including a pad save on a chance by Taylor Wasylk down low. Desjardins then bailed the Huskies out again with a stop on Melissa Bizzari on a 2-on-0 breakaway with just over a minute to play in the period.
Seconds later, the Huskies were robbed again by the pipe as Scamurra streaked in on the right wing and unleashed a twisted wrister that eluded Boyles, but clipped the right post and stayed out.
After a back-and-forth start to the third period, the Eagles were gifted a golden opportunity with a lengthy two-man advantage late in the frame. Desjardins again stood tall, however, denying Lexi Bender on a one-time slap shot from the left faceoff dot. Northeastern was then able to kill off the remaining PP time as the teams headed to overtime tied, 1-1.
The Huskies nearly won the game in the extra session when Scamurra was able to poke the puck up the wall to senior
Claire Santostefano (Wilmette, Ill.) for a 2-on-1 break. Santostefano skated in on the left wing and centered the puck for senior
Brittany Esposito (Edmonton, Alberta), but the pass just missed the stick of the senior and Boyles was able to smother the puck in the crease.
Northeastern and Boston College will meet again on Sunday at Matthews Arena. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
