Pollard ignites second-half run as NU rallies past Hofstra

Box Score   |  Post-game press conference

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.—Demetrius Pollard scored a game-high 25 points and Northeastern shot a season-best 53 percent from beyond the arc to rally past Hofstra, 70-57, on Saturday in CAA men's basketball action.

Trailing by six with 15 minutes to play, the Huskies (7-14, 4-3 CAA) scored 10 straight points to take their first lead of the game and never looked back. NU outscored Hofstra (7-13, 3-2 CAA) 32-13 over the game's final 15 minutes to pull away to the win. The victory was the Huskies' fifth straight over the Pride and evened the all-time series, 17-17. NU has won three of its last four and improved to 3-1 in conference road games.

Pollard (Virginia Beach, Va.) made six threes on the day to go with a game-high six assists. Scott Eatherton (Hershey, Pa.) scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while David Walker added 10 points to give NU three players in double-figures. Zach Stahl (Chanhassen, Minn.) pulled down a game-best eight rebounds to go with nine points.

Dion Nesmith scored 18 points to lead four Pride players in double figures. Zeke Upshaw, the CAA's leading scorer, added 12 points, while Jamall Robinson tallied 11 and Moussa Kone had 10.

Northeastern found itself facing an early double-digit deficit after Hofstra scored on five of its first seven possessions to take a 12-2 lead. But in a game of runs, two Eatherton free throws with just under 14 minutes remaining sparked a 7-0 NU rally. Pollard followed the Eatherton foul shots with a 3-pointer and then collected a steal and fed Eatherton for a dunk that closed the margin to three at 12-9.

With the deficit back to nine, 29-20, with six minutes left in the half, Pollard again led a rally. The junior guard dialed in from beyond the arc then delivered an alley-oop pass to Walker in transition to swing the momentum and pull NU to within four, 29-25, heading into the final media timeout.

The teams traded baskets the rest of the way with Pollard converting a traditional three-point play to send the Huskies to the locker room down just three, 33-30.

A Walker three out of the break leveled the score for the first time since the opening tip. Hofstra responded, though, and pushed out to a 44-38 lead as the game neared the 15-minute mark. From there, it was all Northeastern.

Eatherton converted an offensive rebound and Stahl hit back-to-back layups as the Huskies scored on three straight possessions to ignite a 10-0 run. Pollard followed with a layup to give NU its first lead of the game, then Peck added a tip-in to force a Hofstra timeout.

The break in the action couldn't stop the Northeastern momentum. After a Hofstra free throw, Pollard connected from long range. Eatherton answered a Kone basket with a tip-in and Stahl followed with a free throw. After another Kone basket, Pollard again drained a long-range bomb to give the Huskies an eight-point lead, 57-49, with 7:43 to go.

The Pride, though, would not go quietly, quickly closing to within four. But once again, it was Eatherton and Pollard — with a layup and 3-pointer respectively — who held off the Hofstra rally. Walker added a three from the left wing and Stahl and Banegas-Flores combined to score the game's final five points as NU pulled away to the 70-57 win.

For the fourth time in five games, Coen's Huntington Hounds held their opponent under 60 points. NU is an impressive 20-3 over the last three seasons when limiting opponents to 59 or fewer points. The win also moved NU to 3-1 in CAA road games on the season, and 11-2 in conference road games over two seasons.

For the game, Northeastern shot 52 percent (28-54) from the floor, 53 percent (9-17) from 3-point range, and 71 percent (5-7) from the free-throw line. Hofstra connected on 41 percent (22-54) from the floor, 29 percent (6-21) from beyond the arc, and 78 percent (7-9) from the charity stripe. For the second straight game, the rebounds were even (30-30).

Northeastern will return to action on Wednesday at historic Matthews Arena against James Madison. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The Huskies defeated the Dukes, 56-52, on Jan. 15 in Harrisonburg, Va.
