Post-game InterviewBROOKLINE, Mass. – The Northeastern men's soccer team (3-7-0) held Holy Cross (4-2-2) to just two shots on goal, but the Crusaders capitalized on a chance in the 59th minute to top the Huskies on a soggy Wednesday night at Parsons Field.
Â
Joey DeVito scored the eventual game-winner with 31:40 left in regulation when he deflected a long entry pass from Ryan Gavey. Junior goalkeeper
Dylan Faber made his third start of the season in goal for the Huskies, who outshot Holy Cross 9-7 during the match and earned six corners to the Crusaders' two.
Â
Both teams battled through the conditions during an evenly played first half, with Northeastern holding a 4-2 edge in shots on goal during the opening 45 minutes, including a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Â
Frantzdy Pierrot had the first opportunity for either side in the ninth minute when he broke through a pair of defenders and headed towards goal, but a Crusader raced back to get a foot on Pierrot's bid. Minutes later, Holy Cross had a similar chance from Justin Carfora, but the NU defense held its ground to thwart the attempt.
Â
Christian McKenna continued his strong play of late when he got behind the defense and raced towards the box, but was hauled down resulting in a yellow card to Tim Frasseto. On the ensuing set piece,
Lewis Aird ripped a low shot intended for the left corner, but Wright got a hand on it in the 18th minute.
Â
The Huskies earned consecutive corner chances early in the second half, and
Ackim Mpofu nearly buried an entry feed from
Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave. Mpofu's bid, however, was sent over the crossbar.
Â
Holy Cross capitalized on its first shot on goal of the match in the 59th minute as Joey DeVivo deflected a long entry pass from Ryan Gavey past Faber and into the lower left corner for a 1-0 Crusader lead.
Â
Hamadi Cantave and
Harry Swartz worked to level the score minutes after the Holy Cross tally as Cantave fed Swartz from 20 yards out at the middle of the box, but Swartz's shot went wide right.
Â
Pierrot would make a run down the left side with six minutes to play in regulation, holding the ball before dishing to
Nick Goo in the middle of the box, but the Crusaders knocked it down and cleared.
Â
CAA play gets underway for the Huskies on Saturday when Northeastern travels to the College of Charleston for a 7 p.m. match.
