Box Score ELON, N.C. – Coming off two consecutive shutout wins to College of Charleston and Drexel last week, the Northeastern men's soccer team had difficulty keeping Elon off the scoreboard on Saturday night, as the Phoenix cruised to a 5-0 win.
Â
Elon's five goals are the most the Phoenix have scored all season, and are also the most Northeastern has allowed in a match since falling to Maryland, 5-0, on Sept. 5, 2010.
Â
The Huskies saw a dip in shots from 16 against Drexel on Wednesday to just seven against the Phoenix on Saturday, with only two of those shots winding up on goal.
Â
Elon (5-4-3, 1-1-1 CAA) kept the pressure on Northeastern (5-8-0, 2-1-0 CAA) early in the first half, earning three corners and four shots in the opening 15 minutes of the match. After Jason Waterman missed a shot high, Elon's Caue Da Silva fed James Brace a ball on the left side of the box, and Brace buried it inside the left post to put the Phoenix up 1-0 in the 16th minute.
Â
Seven minutes later it was more of the same from Elon's forwards as Waterman set up Da Silva for the one-timer, putting the Phoenix up 2-0.
Â
Looking to jumpstart the offense and respond to the early deficit, the Huskies made a tactical change and brought on fresh legs in
Mike Lobben and
Nick Goo. However, a yellow card by
Brad Fountain gave Elon another scoring opportunity, and Luis Argudo belted a goal in from 24 yards out to give the Phoenix a 3-0 first half advantage.
Â
Northeastern struggled to control the ball at the start of the second half, and an offensive miscue led to an Elon breakway that saw Waterman put the Phoenix up 4-0 in the 54th minute.
Â
Goalie
Dylan Faber replaced
Jonathan Thuresson in net for the Huskies in the 63rd minute, and Donovan Fayd gave Northeastern several good looks, finishing the match with five of the team's seven shots.
Â
The Phoenix capitalized on their final corner of the match, as Browarsky headed a corner inside the left post from Craig with six seconds to play in the second half. In all, Elon had eight corners to Northeastern's one.
Â
The Huskies will have a week to prepare for their next home match at Parsons Field against UNCW on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.
