ERIE, Pa. -- The Northeastern women's hockey team (0-0-2) will look to pick up its first wins of the 2014-15 season this weekend when it travels to Mercyhurst for a pair of games against the No. 8/10 Lakers.
LONG TIME, NO SEENortheastern will face Mercyhurst this weekend for the first time in 13 years. The teams last met on Oct. 13, 2001 in a 2-0 Huskies win at Matthews Arena. The previous season, Northeastern made its only prior trip to Erie, Pa., taking two games from the Lakers to open the 2000-01 campaign. In three all-time meetings, the Huskies have outscored the Lakers by a 7-2 margin.
SCOUTING THE LAKERSNo. 8/10 Mercyhurst is off to a 3-0-1 start against teams from Hockey East. The Lakers swept Providence by scores of 3-0 and 2-0 to open the year, before earning a win (1-0) and a tie (2-2) against Maine last weekend. Emily Janiga and Jenna Dingeldein lead the team with five points apiece, while goaltender Amanda Makela boasts a 0.49 GAA and a .975 save percentage through four games. After winning the CHA regular season title in 2013-14, the Lakers were picked as co-favorites along with Robert Morris in the 2014-15 preseason coaches' poll.
STALEMATES TO STARTFor the first time in program history, the Huskies opened a season with two ties after playing to draws against Syracuse (1-1) and RIT (2-2) last weekend. Northeastern's longest road trip came during the 1982-83 season, when the Huskies played 10 straight games on the road and went 7-3-0 during the span.
