Postgame InterviewBOSTON – In an evenly-matched game against No. 6/7 Boston University, the Northeastern women's hockey team came up just short in a 3-2 decision on Tuesday at Walter Brown Arena.
Â
Junior
Kendall Coyne had a goal and an assist, and junior
Jordan Krause scored her first goal as a Husky in a wild first period that saw both teams net two goals. Northeastern (1-3-3, 0-1-0 WHEA) outshot Boston University, 39-33, while both teams went 1-for-3 on the power play.
Â
Northeastern broke through for its first first-period goal of the year just over eight minutes into the game. Coyne won a battle in the right corner and worked the puck back to the right point to sophomore
Heather Mottau. Mottau quickly rotated the puck to Krause at the left point for a blast that zipped through traffic into the back of the net to make it 1-0 Huskies.
Â
Boston University (5-2-0, 2-1-0 WHEA) tied the score on the power play at the 13:29 mark when Shannon Doyle's point shot deflected off an NU defender and over the arm of senior
Chloe Desjardins. Then, just under four minutes later, BU took its first lead when Rebecca Russo buried a rebound at the left of the net following a pair of stellar saves by Desjardins.
Â
The back-and-forth action continued in the final minute of the period when Coyne evened the game once again with a power-play marker at the 19:06 mark. Following a too-many-men penalty, Coyne skated into the Terriers' zone and exchanged passes with freshman
McKenna Brand behind the net. Coyne then emerged with the disc at the right of the cage and slipped a shot by BU netminder Erin O'Neil from a sharp angle to make it 2-2.
Â
The scoreline held until midway through the second when BU went ahead for good. On a rush up the ice, Russo was able to fire a shot through a screen from between the circles to put the hosts ahead, 3-2, with 9:06 to play in the second stanza.
Â
Both goaltenders played well to preserve the 3-2 margin down the stretch. Desjardins stopped 25 of the last 26 BU shots, but O'Neil was equally impressive with saves on the final 28 Northeastern attempts.
Â
The Huskies will look to bounce back on Thursday at New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
