Season StatsHEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Paced by a career-high 10 saves from junior goalkeeper
Dylan Faber, the Northeastern men's soccer team (6-10-1, 3-3-1) picked up one point in the CAA standings with a 0-0 draw at Hofstra on Wednesday night.
With the tie, Northeastern now sits in a tie with William & Mary for the sixth and final playoff spot in next week's conference tournament. A win or draw against James Madison on Saturday would give NU the final spot in the postseason tournament with William & Mary already having completed their conference slate (3-4-1).
Faber was tested throughout the match, but saved his best for last with three saves in the second overtime against the Pride, including a game-saving stop on Maid Memic with two seconds remaining in the game. Hofstra outshot the Huskies 24-14 in the match, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Pride also earned eight corners to NU's four.
Hofstra peppered the Huskies with multiple shots through the first 45 minutes of the match, holding a 9-4 edge in the category in the opening half. Faber, however, was up to the task to steer aside all four shots on goal.
One of Northeastern's best chances of the half came in the 11th minute when
Frantzdy Pierrot had a shot blocked that led to a corner opportunity. On the ensuing play,
Daniel Arvidsson inserted the ball across to
Ackim Mpofu, whose shot was also blocked. Faber would come up big for the Huskies on a set piece in the 32nd minute following a yellow card on
Marc Greenblatt, denying a bid from Rory Murphy.
The physical play continued into the second half as each squad had its chances to draw first blood, including a wide shot from
Brad Fountain in the 51st minute on a shot from distance.
Later in the half, Patric was assessed a yellow card for knocking down Pierrot, who had broken free from the Pride defense from 30 yards out. On the ensuing free kick, Fountain sent a hard shot wide of the goal. As Hofstra transitioned downfield, Joseph Holland nearly gave the Pride a 1-0 lead when he headed a pass from Maid Memic to the left of the cage.
Faber made the save of the match with less than three minutes to play in regulation when Holland let a screaming shot go from the left side, but Faber was able to knock down the low bid.
Most of the first overtime was spent in the midfield until the Huskies got an opportunity late in the extra session when NU was awarded a free kick from 25 yards out. Fountain took the set piece for Northeastern, but drilled it right to Pray.
In the opening moments of the second overtime, Faber kept the game scoreless as Memic tested the junior keeper with a shot from the right side following a throw in, but Faber was up to the task, making his eighth save of the evening. Hofstra would have another chance to win the match in the game's final seconds on a corner chance with just 10 seconds remaining, but the NU defense blocked a shot bid from Nino Alfonso before Faber denied Memic with two seconds left to earn the draw.
The Huskies will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when Northeastern hosts James Madison at 1 p.m. Prior to the match, NU will honors its six seniors (
Jacob Aduama,
Hamadi Cantave,
Simon Cox,
Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave,
Nick Goo and
Ambry Moss) for their dedication to the Huskies and the Northeastern community.
