Postgame InterviewBOSTON -- Behind an inspiring performance from junior captain
Kendall Coyne (three goals, two assists), the Northeastern women's hockey team picked up two big points in the Hockey East standings with a 6-3 victory over No. 6 Boston University on Tuesday at Walter Brown Arena.
Coyne notched her fifth career hat trick with three unassisted goals, including one shorthanded marker, to help NU (3-5-3, 2-3-0 WHEA) snap a two-game slide. Freshman
McKenna Brand added two goals, and sophomore
Hayley Scamurra also scored as the Huskies notched their largest scoring output of the season.Â
In addition to her five points, Coyne also added 11 shots on goal and registered a plus-five rating in her first game back from the Four Nations Cup in British Columbia. The three-goal, two-assist effort was Coyne's first career five-point game; the junior has six career four-point games and one career six-point game (Nov. 3, 2012 vs. UConn), but had never recorded exactly five points before Tuesday night.
Senior
Chloe Desjardins (29 saves) set the tone early in the first period with a post-to-post denial on BU's Sarah Lefort just 1:30 into the contest.Â
Minutes later, the Huskies grabbed the lead when freshman
Shelby Herrington won an offensive-zone faceoff back to Scamurra between the circles. The sophomore collected the disc and quickly fired a rising wrist-shot that beat BU netminder Victoria Hanson (23 saves) over the blocker just 3:59 into the contest. The assist was Herrington's first collegiate point in her 11th career game.
The Terriers (6-3-1, 3-2-0 WHEA) battled back to even the scoreline at the 13:28 mark of the frame when Lefort banged home a rebound at the left of the cage. Desjardins made the initial stop on Alexis Woloschuk from between the circles, but the puck skittered right to Lefort who made no mistake on the doorstep.
Less than three minutes later, the Huskies regained the lead when Coyne stole the puck in the neutral zone and raced in alone on goal. The Palos Heights, Illinois, native then made a shifty move to fool Hanson, before burying her sixth goal of the year to put NU back in front, 2-1, with 3:55 showing on the first period clock.
The Huskies carried the momentum into the second stanza and quickly established a three-goal cushion at 4-1 with goals on their first two shots of the frame.Â
Coyne did the dirty work on the third goal, wrestling the puck away from a BU defender behind the net, before centering for a streaking Brand, who slotted home her second goal of the year to bump the score to 3-1 just 1:46 into the period.
Only 1:02 later, the puck was back in the BU net after an incredible individual effort from the Huskies captain, Coyne, in a shorthanded situation. The junior picked up a loose puck at center ice and danced around a BU defender, before ripping an unstoppable shot into the upper right corner of the net to make it 4-1 just 2:48 into the period.
The Huskies continued their trend of scoring early in the period when Brand netted her second of the night at the 4:27 mark of the third. Junior
Jordan Krause picked off a failed clearing attempt along the right boards and flipped a shot at the net. Hanson got a pad on it, but the rebound slid right to the tape of Brand, who buried the puck for her first career multi-goal game to make it 5-1 Huskies.
The Terriers did not go quietly, and promptly made it 5-3 by the 12:14 mark. Shannon Doyle was credited with the second BU goal on a shot from the left point, before Victoria Bach cut the NU cushion to two with a deflection on a power play.Â
With just over two minutes remaining, BU elected to pull Hanson in favor of the extra attacker. The move did not pay dividends as Coyne quickly made the hosts pay with an empty-net tally at 18:35 to complete the hat trick and seal the game, 6-3, in Northeastern's favor.Â
The rejuvenated Huskies will look to carry their momentum into the weekend for a home-and-home series against Providence on Nov. 15-16.
