MORAGA, Calif. – In a game featuring 13 ties and 20 lead changes, the Saint Mary's men's basketball team outlasted Northeastern, 72-68, in overtime on Monday night at McKeon Pavilion.

Junior Zach Stahl connected on a layup with 12 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 63-apiece, and the Northeastern defense came up with a big stop on the ensuing possession to force overtime.

The Huskies (7-4) briefly took the lead in the extra session following an and-one from sophomore T.J. Williams, who hit an off-balance leaner and the ensuing free throw to make it 68-66 Northeastern.

The Gaels (7-3) scored the final six points of the frame, however, capitalizing on three Northeastern turnovers and four free throws from Aaron Bright to escape with the four-point victory.

Senior Scott Eatherton scored in double-figures for the 10th straight game, notching 11 points and five rebounds. Redshirt junior Quincy Ford tied a season-high with 18 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists, while Williams (13 points) and Stahl (12 points) each added double-figure scoring performances.

The Gaels out-rebounded the Huskies by a 39-29 margin, led by double-double machine Brad Waldow, who recorded 18 points and a game-high 10 boards. Kerry Carter added 17 points, while Bright chipped in 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Saint Mary's outscored NU in the paint, 44-26, and knocked down 11-of-13 free throws. Northeastern went 15-for-21 at the foul line (71 percent), while both teams shot 44 percent from the field.

The Huskies held a 40-38 lead at the half despite attempting 11 fewer shots than the Gaels in the opening frame. Northeastern shot 59 percent in the stanza and was able to overcome an early seven-point deficit with an 8-0 run featuring a 3-pointer by Caleb Donnelly and field goals by Eatherton and Ford.

Northeastern led by as many as four late in the first frame, before a buzzer-beating floater by Bright brought the hosts within two at the break.

The Huskies extended their lead to five early in the second half following a 3-pointer from Ford, but the Gaels quickly battled back to tie on a layup by Waldow and a triple from Carter.

The teams then exchanged leads down the stretch, before Saint Mary's was finally able to establish a three-point cushion at 61-58 following a mid-range jumper by Waldow.

Junior David Walker then stepped up and buried a clutch corner three to tie the score at 61-apiece with 2:19 remaining. After the Gaels went back ahead on another Waldow layup, Walker made another tremendous play to find Stahl open under the basket for the game-tying layup with 12 ticks remaining.

Trailing 70-68 in overtime, junior Reggie Spencer came up with a big steal to give the Huskies a chance to even the score with 47 seconds remaining. Northeastern turned it right back over, however, and Saint Mary's was able to salt away the game with two free throws at the other end.

The Huskies will close out the 2014 calendar year with a matchup at Richmond on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, at 4 p.m.
