T.J. Williams scored a career-high 20 points and hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 18 seconds left to help the Northeastern men's basketball team overcome a 13-point second half deficit in a 58-57 win over Richmond on Wednesday at the Robins Center.
The Huskies (8-4) held the Spiders (7-6) scoreless for a span of 4:43 in the final minutes to close the game on an 11-2 run and earn their first win over an Atlantic-10 school since Dec. 1, 2004 against UMass.
Northeastern trailed for nearly the entire second half, before a layup by
Reggie Spencer knotted the scoreline at 55-apiece with 1:20 to play. After a defensive stand, the Huskies took their first lead of the game since 2-0 when Williams hit a contested 3-pointer from the left wing to make it 58-55 with 18 seconds left.Â
Richmond cut the margin to one at the buzzer courtesy of a Trey Davis put-back, the Spiders' first points since the 4:44 mark of the second half.
Williams scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half courtesy of five 3-pointers, including three in the final eight minutes. The sophomore also added six rebounds and a game-high six assists to help NU earn its second double-digit comeback of the season (Boston University) and 12th in the last three years.
Williams was joined in double-figure scoring by redshirt junior
Quincy Ford, who scored 12 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.Â
Spencer gave the Huskies a huge boost off the bench with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with five rebounds.
Richmond's Kendall Anthony scored 18 points, but was held to just four points in the second half as the Huskies' defense took the senior out of the game down the stretch.Â
Northeastern shot 48 percent on the day, including a 54 percent clip in the second half (14-for-26). The Huskies made seven 3-pointers and out-rebounded Richmond by a 34-26 margin.
The Spiders led by 12 points at halftime, 35-23, as Anthony and Terry Allen combined for 26 points in the opening 20 minutes. Richmond committed only one turnover in the first frame and started 12-for-16 (75 percent) from 2-point territory.
Williams ignited the Northeastern comeback with a pair of 3-pointers to bring NU within five, 43-38, with 11:16 left.Â

Zach Stahl and Spencer evened the scoreline with 80 seconds remaining.
Northeastern's defense was outstanding in the final five minutes, holding Richmond to 1-of-6 shooting down the stretch, with the lone field goal coming as time expired.Â
The Huskies will look to ride the momentum of their New Year's Eve triumph into CAA play, which commences on Saturday, Jan. 3 at Delaware at 2 p.m.
