BOSTON – The Northeastern men's and women's track and field teams logged a combined total of 41 top-10 finishes after wrapping up a strong split-squad weekend at three different competitions.
The weekend's action was highlighted by
Jocelyn Hubbard's record-breaking mile run at the Scarlet and White Invitational in Boston, Mass. Hubbard crossed the finish line with a time of 4:47.10, snapping the previous school record of 4:50.10, held by Brittany Moriarty.
Hubbard's mark in the mile run marks the second time this season she's rewritten Northeastern's record books after breaking NU's all-time record in the 800-meter run just last week at the Valentine Invitational, with a time of 2:08.61.
Scarlet and White Invitational
In addition to Hubbard's historic mile run, the women's team recorded four personal bests, 14 New England Qualifiers, and six ECAC-qualifying marks at the Scarlet and White Invitational hosted by cross-town rival Boston University.
Eryn Wheeler snagged the individual title in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:52.32, good for an ECAC qualifier and new personal best. Finishing just behind Wheeler was
Kate Johnstone, who took second place in the event and qualified for ECAC's with a season-best mark of 2:53.41.
Camille Gooden had a strong meet after running ECAC-qualifying times in both the 200-meter (24.74) and 400-meter events (56.21). Senior
Chelsea Hudson led a trio of Huskies in the 500-meter run to collect a first place finish (1:17.23), while teammate
Madison Goldstein recorded a personal best time after crossing at 1:22.03.
In the field,
Jacilyn Briggs set a personal-best in the pole vault after clearing 3.80 meters, punching her ticket to the ECAC meet. Senior
Julia Westover also captured first-place and an ECAC-qualifier in the weight throw after tossing a season-best 17.66 meters.
Meanwhile, the men's squad earned 11 personal best times, nine New England Championship qualifiers, and five IC4A-qualifying marks on the day.
In the men's 200-meter dash, Kwame Fordwor notched sixth place with an IC4A-qualifying time of 22.20, while teammate
Donovan Henry followed closely behind in seventh place after crossing the finish line at 22.29. Henry also posted a season-best mark in the 400-meter race with a time of 49.72.
The men had a strong showing in the field, capturing three first-place titles from
Kevin Rosenberg,
Max Milder, and
Kyle Darrow. Rosenberg earned first in the shot put after tossing an IC4A-qualifying 16.03 meters. He later recorded a personal best in the weight throw (15.83m). Milder earned first-place in the weight throw event (17.42m) after throwing both New England Championships and IC4A-qualifying tosses for the fifth time this season. Darrow jumped an IC4A-qualifying 7.13 meters in the long jump, good for first place.
Other individual crowns for the men included
Anthony Pavlich's 500-meter race (1:05.77), and teammate
Stephen Sollowin's personal best time of 4:08.04 in the mile run.
SPIRE Invitational
Due to inclement weather conditions, only two members of the women's track and field team were able to travel to Geneva, Ohio for the SPIRE Invitational, held at the SPIRE Institute.
Nicole Genard and
Betsy Garnick represented Northeastern at the two-day event where they competed in the women's pentathlon on Friday.
Genard and Garnick finished in eighth and ninth place overall, respectively, after competing in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and 800-meter run. Genard tallied a total of 3258 points (8.86, 1.47m, 10.63m, 5.36m, 2:46.55) to rank 8th on the Northeastern all-time pentathlon performance list. Garnick totaled 3179 points (9.00, 1.44m, 9.96m, 5.06m, 2:36.69), good for 10th all-time at Northeastern.
Both Genard and Garnick recorded qualifying times for the New England Championships in the 60-meter hurdles before notching season-bests in the 800-meter run.
Tufts Cupid Challenge
The men's 4x800 relay team was the only Northeastern representative at the Cupid Challenge competition on Saturday, held by Tufts University in Medford, Mass. The team, made up of
Paul Duffey,
David McDonald,
Craig Hammond, and
Connor Quinn, took home a first place finish with a time of 7:57.49 after edging out Bowdoin in the final straightaway.
The Huskies will be back in action next week as they travel to the University of Notre Dame on Feb. 22, to compete one last time before gearing up for New England Championships in Boston, Mass., the following weekend.
