Results | Sunday scheduleBOSTON—The Northeastern University men's rowing team ensured that the East Coast will be represented in the top men's collegiate grand finals at the 41st San Diego Crew Classic. The NU varsity and second varsity earned second and first place finishes, respectively, in their heats on Saturday to advance to Sunday's championship races on Mission Bay in San Diego.
In the varsity eight heat, Northeastern shrugged off a sluggish start to finish second to Stanford. The hard-charging Huskies, who slipped to fourth off the start, made progress on the field through the finish and closed quickly on the Cardinal in the race's final stage.
After a challenging start, the Red and Black climbed to third by the 500-meter mark and established its rhythm. Stanford, though, continued to set the pace and broke open water on the field by 700 meters.
The Huskies continued to make gains, and moved through George Washington and into second place at the 1100-meter mark.
Northeastern maintained its push and closed hard on Stanford through the finish. The Cardinal, though, held on to win the heat by a length, with a time of 5:55.097. Northeastern crossed the line in 5:57.783, followed by George Washington (6:00.791), Michigan (6:04.648), UC Santa Barbara (6:08.359), and Trinity (6:13.896).
California won the other Men's Collegiate Invitational heat. (For complete race results, visit

In the second varsity eight heat, Northeastern walked away from the field to win decisively. The Huskies led wire-to-wire, defeating California 'B' and Stanford by more than 11 seconds. NU cruised to a time of 5:58.038 on the Mission Bay course. California 'B' was second, with a time of 6:09.406, followed by Stanford (6:09.935), Gonzaga (6:15.103), UC San Diego (6:17.306), UCLA (6:30.437), Santa Clara (6:33.600), and Cal State Long Beach (7:11.931).
The East Coast Huskies performed well despite a challenging New England winter that allowed for little time on the Charles River. Northeastern, which won 11 of 12 races to open the season a weekend ago, will compete Sunday to bring the Copley Cup and Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Memorial Trophy home to Boston and Henderson Boathouse.
The Northeastern varsity will take to Mission Bay at 10:10 Sunday morning (1:10 EDT) in the Men's Collegiate Invitational Grand Final. The Huskies' second varsity will race at 10:30 (1:30 EDT) in the Men's Collegiate 2V Grand Final. To watch the races live, visit
