NU captures two second-place finishes at San Diego Crew Classic

Results

BOSTON — The Northeastern University men's rowing team captured a pair of second-place finishes in the top men's collegiate grand finals at the 41st San Diego Crew Classic. California won both the Men's Collegiate Invitational and 2V grand finals, with the Huskies taking second in both events by wide margins.

The second-place showing in the varsity eight Copley Cup race equals the best-ever performance by a Northeastern crew at the Crew Classic, achieved most recently in 2004.

"This was a fantastic weekend of tremendous progress by both crews," said head coach John Pojednic. "Both boats raced harder, better, and faster as the weekend progressed. We are pleased with these early season results and look forward to continuing to gain speed through the season. There were great wins over a number of strong opponents. We will see Cal again at the IRA National Championship in June."

In the varsity eight race, California outlasted the field to defend its Copley Cup title. The Bears established a strong lead over the first half of the race, with Northeastern and Stanford engaged in a battle for second. The Cardinal, which won the Huskies' heat a day earlier, edged out to a four-seat lead over NU by 500 meters. The Huskies, though, charged back. NU powered through Stanford at 900 meters with a move and slight increase in stroke rate, and began reaching for Cal. The Huskies broke open water on the Cardinal to claim second place by an easy margin. The Golden Bears retained the Copley Cup with a time of 5:49.68. Northeastern was second at 5:57.51, followed by Stanford (6:05.26), British Columbia (6:07.81), George Washington (6:08.10), and Syracuse (6:10.00).

In the second varsity eight grand final, Northeastern defeated California B by more than 10 seconds to easily take second place. The Golden Bears' A crew won the event with a time of 6:01.22, followed by NU at 6:08.95. Cal B completed the course in 6:19.21, good for third, followed by British Columbia (6:22.35), San Diego (6:23.43), Stanford (6:26.29), Gonzaga (6:29.56), and OCC (6:32.94).

Northeastern will return to its home Charles River course next weekend to face Boston University on Saturday, April 12, in the annual Arlett Cup race. Competition between the city rivals will begin at 9 a.m., with the varsity eight event. Northeastern leads the all-time series with BU, 42-12. The Huskies are 27-9 against the Terriers since the introduction of the Arlett Cup, and have won 11 of the last 13 cup races.
