Dunn sisters score as NU downs Dartmouth

Kelly and Marisa Dunn both scored in the victory.
Box Score

DEDHAM, Mass. – Behind the duo of Kelly and Marisa Dunn, the Northeastern Huskies defeated the Dartmouth Big Green, 2-0, for their second straight win.

The Huskies came out firing early and often, outshooting the Big Green 14-3 by the end of the game. Head coach Cheryl Murtagh's squad combined a strong offensive showing with a formidable defensive front to earn the victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Becky Garner registered her first shutout of the season and the fourth of her young career.

After a scoreless first 35 minutes, Marisa Dunn broke through just a little more than halfway through the second half for the games first goal. Kelly Dunn inserted the ball off a corner that found the stick of Vanessa Pryor. The forward then ripped one on net, which deflected off Dunn's stick and ended up beating Dartmouth's goalkeeper, Ellen Meyer.

The goal was Dunn's second of the season, both of which have come off penalty corners. The assist was credited to Vanessa Pryor, also her second of the season.

Just three minutes later, her sister Kelly Dunn found the back of the goal. Again, the senior inserted the ball off a corner that went to fellow captain Kate Carlson, who set up Emmy Zweserijn for the shot. Zweserijn put a hard shot on net that was saved, but the ball popped in the air where Dunn was able to finish it for the goal. It was the Dunn's second goal of the season, which matches her 2013 season total.

Defensively, the Huskies were sound throughout the game. The three shots they allowed to the Big Green marks the lowest number of shots they've yielded to an opponent through four games this season. The fast-pace offense of Dartmouth was met time and time again with timely poke-checks from the Husky defenders.

The Huskies were again successful off corners for the second straight game. Of their last seven goals, five have come off penalty corners.

NU opened the game with a strong first half, outshooting their New England rival by a 6-0 mark. The team was able to keep the ball in their offensive zone and maintain consistent pressure on Dartmouth.

Garner stood tall on the other end, breaking up pass attempts and keeping the Big Green off the score sheet. Kate Carlson, Natalie Stewart, and Emma Lamison registered two shots apiece for the Huskies in the opening 35 minutes.

Northeastern is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. against another New England rival and Murtagh's alma mater, the University of New Hampshire Wildcats.

Students: Buses will be available for fans looking to attend the game. They will depart from Chicken Lou's at 12:45 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. Following the game, the buses will shuttle fans back to campus.
