Box Score ELON, N.C. -- Freshman
Hannah Lopiccolo scored twice and senior
Paige Burnett made three saves as the Northeastern women's soccer team (7-3-2, 2-0-0 CAA) set a new single-season program record with its ninth shutout of the year in a 4-0 rout of Elon (4-6-0, 0-2-0 CAA) in CAA play Sunday.
The Huskies have now shutout their opponents in nine of 12 games this season, including three straight and six of their last seven. Northeastern also won its seventh game Sunday, surpassing last season's total of six wins with seven matches still remaining on the regular season schedule.
Sophomores
Carina Deandreis and
Mackenzie Dowd also scored for Northeastern, while senior
Bianca Calderone added two assists. Dowd's goal was the second for the sophomore in as many matches after netting the winner in the 80th minute at William & Mary on Friday.
The Huskies held a 14-7 advantage in shots and an 8-7 edge in corner kicks. Northeastern made the best of its corner opportunities as well, converting its first two goals off set pieces from the corner flag.
In the 31st minute, Lopiccolo played a cross from a corner into the box to Calderone, who headed it to Deandreis for a volley that beat Elon keeper Hanna Macaulay. Northeastern then struck again from a corner three minutes after the halftime break when sophomore
Kimberly Slade played a dangerous cross into the box which glanced off Calderone, before finding Dowd for her third goal of the season.
Lopiccolo took over from there. In the 65th minute, the freshman took a cross from sophomore
Taylor Caparo and drilled a shot by Macaulay from 18 yards out to make it 3-0. The Trabuco Canyon, California, native then added a fourth with a strike from 15 yards away in the 70th minute.Â
Lopiccolo's five-point effort (two goals, one assist) gives her 11 points in 12 matches, good for the most on the team.Â
The red-hot Huskies return home next week to face Towson on Friday, Oct. 3 and James Madison on Sunday, Oct. 5.Â
