BOSTON – After splitting a pair of games against College Hockey America (CHA) opponents last weekend, the Northeastern women's hockey team (2-1-1) will welcome yet another CHA foe this weekend when Mercyhurst (0-1-1) visits Matthews Arena for a pair of games. Both teams are receiving votes in the latest national polls.
HISTORY VS. MERCYHURSTNortheastern owns a 4-1-0 all-time record against Mercyhurst. Four of the five games have been contested at the Lakers' home rink, including a pair of games last year in which the teams split. Northeastern knocked off Mercyhurst, 4-0, on Oct. 17, 2014 as
Kendall Coyne notched a goal and two assists. The Lakers returned the favor the following day with a 4-2 victory to earn their first and only win over NU in program history. Mercyhurst has not visited Matthews Arena since a 2-0 Huskies' win on Oct. 13, 2001.
COYNE EYES CENTURY MARKSenior captain
Kendall Coyne enters the weekend needing two goals to hit 100 for her collegiate career. The Palos Heights, Illinois, native ranks first among active career leaders in the NCAA with 98 goals and needs to light the lamp 16 more times to break the Northeastern scoring record held by Hilary Witt (113 goals). Since 2000, only 16 Division I players have eclipsed the 100-goal plateau in their careers.
NUMERICAL ADVANTAGEThrough four games, the Huskies own the second-ranked power-play in the nation at 36.4 percent (4-for-11). Northeastern has scored with the numerical-advantage in each of its last three games. Only No. 1 Minnesota has been more efficient on the power play (6-for-10) than NU this season.
OFFENSE ON DISPLAYThe Huskies rank fifth in the NCAA in scoring offense this season with 4.50 goals per game. Including the exhibition contest against Toronto Leaside, NU has scored five or more goals in three of its five contests. Fifteen players on the Huskies' roster have recorded at least a point thus far.
SHELBY STEPS UPSophomore
Shelby Herrington has stepped up in a big way this season, chipping in four goals in the first four games. After recording no goals and one assist in 32 contests last year, Herrington has turned into a scoring machine in 2015-16, lighting the lamp in three of NU's first four games, including her first collegiate two-goal performance in a 5-4 win over Syracuse on Oct. 9.
SOPHOMORE SURGENortheastern's eight-member sophomore class has produced 18 of the team's 43 points so far, good for 42 percent of NU's overall offensive output. Seven of the Huskies' 18 goals have been scored by second-year players, including four by
Shelby Herrington, while 11 of NU's 25 assists have come from sophomores, including four from
Denisa Krizova.
