InfographicBROOKLINE, Mass. – First-half goals by
Christian McKenna and
Khesanio Hall powered the Northeastern men's soccer team to a two-goal lead that the Huskies never relinquished to College of Charleston on Senior Day at Parsons Field as NU earned a 2-1 victory.
Northeastern (3-9-2, 2-5-0 CAA) kept its CAA tournament hopes alive by claiming all three points against the Cougars, finishing off the week a perfect 2-0-0 after Wednesday's non-conference victory at Holy Cross. NU outshot College of Charleston (6-6-2, 3-2-1 CAA), 16-6, overall and, 6-3, on goal, making Saturday's game the third straight in which the Huskies have led both statistical categories.
Sophomore forward
Harry Swartz led Northeastern with five shot attempts, placing one on goal in the 79th minute.
Christian McKenna,
Khesanio Hall, and
Frantzdy Pierrot each ended the match with three shots apiece, while
Ackim Mpofu directed two shots on goal before the final horn.
Northeastern's forwards took the reigns of the Huskies' offense early in the first half as Hall and Swartz managed to produce back-to-back shots in the sixth minute. Shortly after Pierrot and
Kevin Carvalho had brought fresh legs into the NU lineup in the 19th minute, McKenna volleyed home his second goal of the year to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Fouls were a reoccurring theme between Northeastern and College of Charleston as both teams worked to establish an attacking rhythm. A costly foul by the Cougars in the box awarded NU a penalty kick in the 27th minute, and the Huskies capitalized as Hall punched the ball through to the back netting to give NU a 2-0 lead.
Jonathan Thuresson came away with two saves in the first half, keeping the Huskies' lead at two as the two sides headed into the locker rooms.
Leading the Cougars, 6-4, in shots at the break, NU edged out Charleston, 10-2, in shots during the final 45 minutes of play. The Cougars were finally able to find the back of the net in the 62nd minute as Leland Archer re-directed a cross from the center of the field to make it 2-1, Northeastern.
NU held its composure down the stretch and saw the Cougars rack up two more yellow cards during the final half hour. Thuresson was cautioned himself in the 88th minute for a delay of game, but the Northeastern keeper was rarely challenged as the Huskies polished off a 2-1 victory.
Northeastern will travel to No. 6 North Carolina on Tuesday, Oct. 27, for a 7 p.m. non-conference game. The Huskies will then wrap up their CAA schedule on Saturday, Oct. 31 with a 4 p.m. game at Drexel.
