ELON, N.C. – A first-half goal by Frantzdy Pierrot had the Northeastern men's soccer team thinking upset on Wednesday afternoon, but a second-half surge by No. 13 Elon was too strong for NU to handle as the Phoenix escaped their home field with a 2-1 victory against the Huskies.

Pierrot headed in his third goal of the 2015 season on a set piece in the 11th minute, utilizing his 6-4 frame to power the Huskies to an early 1-0 advantage. Daniel Arvidsson was credited with his first assist of the year, crossing a corner from the left side to the far side of the inner box, where Pierrot had established position.

The Huskies opened the match firing on all cylinders, winning two corners and registering the first two shots of the game during the first quarter-hour. Elon (9-3-0, 3-1-0 CAA) struggled to maintain possession in its attacking quadrant during the early going as a result of strong defensive play by the NU midfielders, who helped the defensive line keep the Phoenix without a shot until the 21st minute.

Northeastern (0-7-2, 0-3-0 CAA) narrowly avoided conceding a penalty kick in the 31st minute after Alex Ainscough brought down an Elon player right on the edge of the box. NU successfully blocked back-to-back shots by Eduardo Alvarez, preserving the 1-0 edge.

Although the Huskies appeared to be heading into the locker room with a one-goal advantage, two yellow cards issued to Pierrot and the Northeastern bench awarded the Phoenix a free kick from midfield with five seconds remaining in the half. Upon play resuming, Elon tied the match at 1-1 as Matthew Jegier's 50-yard cross deflected off Jonathan Wenger's head and through the net for the equalizer.

Despite surrendering the lead, the Huskies began the second half with intensity, winning a corner in the 50th minute. After A. Ainscough's shot was blocked from 20 yards out, Pierrot came inches away from sending NU in front in the 53rd minute, heading a ball just left of the net.

Elon began to quicken its pace of play as the second half progressed, directing a number of passes inside the box. Amir Berkane was able to break the tie for the Phoenix in the 72nd minute, finishing a cross from the left side that put Elon ahead for good at 2-1.

Thuresson ended the match with four saves, raising his season total to 24. Elon went on to outshoot Northeastern, 15-7 (6-2 on goal).

The Huskies will return home to Parsons Field on Saturday, Oct. 10, for a CAA game against William & Mary.
