HighlightsCORAL GABLES, Fla. – In his return to his home state of Florida, redshirt senior
Quincy Ford drained a jumper at the buzzer to help the Northeastern men's basketball team to an upset victory over No. 15/19 Miami, 78-77 on Friday afternoon.
Â
Ford, who finished the game with 24 points, including five three-pointers, six rebounds and four steals helped the Huskies (5-1) to their first win over a ranked team since Nov. 28, 1986, almost 29 years ago to the day, and handed Miami its first loss of the season (5-1).
Â
The Huskies last victory over a ranked team came against No. 2, and defending national champ, Louisville at the Great Alaska Shootout.
Â
Ford was one of five players to hit a three-pointer, none more critical than
Jeremy Miller's with 2:53 remaining in the game. Miller, who hit his second three of the day, was fouled on the play and sank the free throw to turn what was a six-point lead into just two.
Â
Miami extended the lead to four but
Zach Stahl and Ford knotted the game up with 1:48 left with a layup and jumper at 72-all, while
David Walker put the Huskies on top with just under a minute remaining.
Â
Walker extended the lead to four with a pair of free throws, but Miami cut that to one using a three-pointer and, after a Husky turnover on an inbound pass, took the lead with 23 seconds left in the game.
Â
Devon Begley drove in to score the game-winner with 5.6 seconds left, but was blocked, setting up Ford's game-winning bucket.
Â
Northeastern shot 54.5 percent from three-point range on the day going 12-for-22, and 25-for-54 from the field.
Â
Alongside Ford, Walker also tallied a 20-point game, finishing with 21 on the day, and was 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. It was his third-straight 20-point game.
Â
Miami was led by Davon Reed who had 19 points and seven rebounds on the day, as well as Sheldon McClellan who finished with 18 points.
Â
The Huskies jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind two three-pointers from Ford and never looked back, hanging on to that lead heading into the half, 35-30.
Â
Along the way, four other Huskies drained threes, including two from Begley as seven of Northeastern's 11 baskets in the first half came from behind the arc.
Â
Northeastern took its largest lead of the half, with 7:09 remaining via a Walker three-pointer, before Miami put together a run of its own to cut the Huskies' lead to just three. Head Coach
Bill Coen called the quick timeout and play went back-and-forth before a patented Donnelly three, from the corner, sent the Huskies into the locker room with a five-point lead.
Â
The two teams traded shots after the half, and from 17:16 until 11:56, Ford tallied 13-straight Husky points.
Â
With 8:45 remaining, Miami tied the game up at 55-all and took its first lead of the ball game with 7:48 remaining in play.
Â
The Hurricanes jumped out to its largest lead of the game, seven points, before Miller's three helped Northeastern back into the game.
Â
The Huskies will look to keep the momentum going when they return home for a mid-week game against cross-town rival Harvard on Wednesday, December 2 at 7 p.m. in the Matthews opener.
Â
Remember, the Huskies will raise the 2015 CAA and NCAA Tournament banners at halftime of the game.
