Postgame PresserBOSTON – Northeastern's perfect home record was tarnished Saturday afternoon by the No. 1 ranked Michigan State Spartans in front of a sellout crowd of 5,288 at Matthew Arena.
The Matthews sellout was the first in nearly 20 years, since the 1995-96 season when No. 20 Duke came to town on Dec. 30, 1995.
The Huskies (7-4) were led by
Zach Stahl who had a game-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds and two blocks on the day.
David Walker finished with 13 points and eight assists while
Quincy Ford chipped in 10 to go along with eight rebounds.
Ford has finished each game of 2015-16 with a double-digit effort. Stahl's 18 points were two shy of his career best 20 set earlier this season against Florida Atlantic. Walker's eight assists tie a career-high.
Michigan State (12-0) was led by Denzel Valentine's 17 points, six assists and five rebounds. Bryn Forbes notched 12 and Lourawls Nairn Jr. had 11 in the win.
Northeastern outrebounded Michigan State 35-33 on the game, the first team to outrebound the Spartans this season. Michigan State came into the game +16.9 in the rebound column. The Huskies finished with 16 offensive boards on the day.
The Huskies kept things close in the first half as the two teams traded buckets to begin the day. Northeastern jumped out to a 13-10 lead behind back-to-back threes by
David Walker and
Caleb Donnelly heading into the under-12 media.
Northeastern extended its lead to 15-10 using a
T.J. Williams layup, but Michigan State notched a 7-0 run to retake the lead. A Denzel Valentine 3-pointer gave Michigan State a 6-point lead with six minutes remaining in the half and the Spartans headed into the locker room with a nine-point cushion up 34-25.
The Huskies came out of the locker room tallying the first basket of the half on a
David Walker layup, and forced a turnover on Michigan State's first possession but the Spartans rallied off a 13-2 run from 18:18 until the 12:50 mark, holding the Huskies bucketless from the field during that time and jumping out to an 18-point lead.
Northeastern clawed back cutting the double-digit lead to 12, but that was as close as the team could get as the Spartans came away with the 20-point victory.
The Huskies will return to action on Tuesday, December 22 when they take on Vermont in their final home game of 2015 at 1 p.m.
