InfographicCAMBRIDGE – Despite a career-high 38 saves from sophomore
Sarah Foss, the Northeastern women's hockey team (9-15-4) dropped a tightly-contested 3-1 decision to No. 7 Boston University (19-7-2) in the consolation game of the Women's Beanpot at Harvard's Bright-Landry Center.
Sophomore
Hayley Masters scored for the fifth time in six games, and senior
Chelsiea Goll earned an assist for the second straight game.Â
The Terriers held a 41-32 edge in shots on goal and received two goals from Marie-Philip Poulin, including an empty netter with 50 seconds remaining.
Poulin put BU on the board with an unassisted strike at the 2:38 mark of the first period. After a turnover outside the NU blueline, Poulin scooped up the puck and skated in on the left wing. Using a defenseman for a screen, Poulin zipped a shot through traffic and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 Terriers.
Boston University doubled the lead with 21 seconds to play in the frame when Kayla Tutino slipped a shot through the pads of Foss at the right of the net.
The Huskies quickly responded in the early stages of the second period when Masters–Friday's OT hero against Providence–lit the lamp yet again. Goll started the play by forcing a turnover behind the BU net, before centering for a cutting Masters for a one-timer in the slot that made it 2-1 just 16 seconds into the frame.
At the other end of the rink, Foss stopped all 11 BU shots in the second period, including a pair of impressive denials on Poulin, to keep the scoreline at 2-1 heading to the third period.
Foss continued her stellar play early in the third period with a huge save on a Shannon Doyle deflection, before slamming the door on Poulin once again on the doorstep.Â
Foss then made one of her best stops of the night at the eight-minute mark of the third, sliding post-to-post to rob Sarah Lefort's one-timer on the rush.
The Huskies' netminder was summoned to the bench in favor of an extra attacker with just over a minute remaining, but Poulin was able to salt the game away with an empty-netter at the 19:10 mark to make it 3-1.
Northeastern will return to Hockey East play this weekend for a pair of pivotal games at Connecticut on Feb. 14-15.Â
