BOSTON – Four goals from
Kevin Roy, three from
Zach Aston-Reese and 27 saves from
Clay Witt led the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (13-11-4, 8-7-2) to a 9-0 victory against Connecticut (9-14-7, 6-8-4) on Friday night at Matthews Arena.
The victory extends the Northeastern winning streak to five games, tied for the ninth longest streak in school history. Twelve different Huskies recorded points on the night in their largest scoring output since Oct. 11, 2013 vs. Alabama-Huntsville and their largest margin of victory since a 10-1 win vs. Connecticut on Oct. 11, 2002.
Northeastern outshot UConn 31-27 in the game and was 2-of-6 on the power play. UConn won 43-of-71 face-offs and was 0-of-5 on the man advantage.
Northeastern came out firing in the first period, scoring five times on 13 shots to take a commanding 5-0 lead through 20 minutes of play. Aston-Reese buried the first two goals for the Huskies, both on redirections, in the first 11 minutes of the frame. The first came when
Colton Saucerman took a feed from
Mike Szmatula at the goal line, and fired a low shot that Aston-Reese got a stick on past Nichols.
With NU on the power play eight minutes later, Aston-Reese put Northeastern up by two when he tipped a shot from
John Stevens at the blue line top shelf.
Garret Cockerill gave the home team a three-goal edge exactly two minutes after the Aston-Reese power play marker when he stepped into a one-timer off a pass from
Brendan Collier to beat Nichols short side for his second of the year.
With Connecticut in the box for a hook late in the frame, Roy received a pass from
Matt Benning in transition, and ripped a wrist shot from atop the left face-off dot past Nichols for Roy's 13th of the season.
Szmatula extended the Northeastern advantage to five with a shorthanded marker in the final minute of the period.
Torin Snydeman began the play by intercepting the puck below the goal line and dishing to Szmatula, who knocked it into the empty net before Nichols could recover.
Northeastern kept the pressure on throughout the second period, scoring two more goals, including Aston-Reese's third of the night midway through the frame. Witt kept Connecticut off the board five minutes into the frame when he held his post to stone Trevor Gerling on a snapshot from the right dot.
Aston-Reese put NU up by six with 9:59 left in the period when he redirected another shot from Saucerman in the slot through the five-hole of Nichols for his first career hat trick.
Roy potted his second of the night in the final minute of the stanza when he beat Nichols on a shot from atop the crease with assists going to
Dalen Hedges and Benning.
Northeastern's strong play continued into the third period with another two goals from Roy. The first came when less than five minutes into the period when he knocked home a shot past Nichols off a pass from Hedges before pounding home his fourth of the game with 7:44 to play in regulation on the doorstep to put NU up 9-0.
The teams will square off again tomorrow afternoon in the series finale. Puck drop is slated for 3:35 p.m. at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
