InfographicCAMBRIDGE – The Northeastern women's hockey team (8-14-4) put a scare into unbeaten No. 1 Boston College (26-0-1), but the Eagles were ultimately able to pull out a 3-1 victory on Tuesday in the Women's Beanpot semifinals at the Bright-Landry Center.
Freshman
McKenna Brand gave NU the lead in the second period with her seventh goal of the season, but goals from Emily Field, Haley Skarupa, and Andie Anastos turned the game in BC's favor as the Eagles extended their unbeaten streak to 27 games.
Senior
Chloe Desjardins was outstanding all game, making 35 saves to keep Northeastern in the contest from start to finish.
The story of the first period was Desjardins, who stopped all 15 Boston College shots. The senior made several stand-out saves, including a pair of close-range robberies on Tori Sullivan in the final four minutes of the period.
Capitalizing on the momentum from Desjardins' stellar play, the Huskies went to work in the second period and took their first lead over BC this season after a terrific play by Brand.Â
The freshman stripped the puck from a BC player in the neutral zone, before directing a feed to sophomore
Heather Mottau at center ice. Mottau quickly advanced the puck to junior
Tori Hickel, who was skating hard into the BC zone. Hickel then alertly dropped the puck back to Brand at the right circle for a shot that beat BC netminder Katie Burt to the short-side at the 7:52 mark of the frame.Â
After several minutes of back-and-forth hockey, Boston College finally solved Desjardins with 2:42 showing on the second period clock. On a 4-on-4 situation, Emily Pfalzer picked up the puck outside the NU zone and fed Field on the right wing. Field skated in and fired a shot from the circle that appeared to deflect under the blocker of the Huskies' netminder to bring the score to 1-1.Â
Desjardins returned the favor early in the third period with a sliding kick-save on Field at the left post to keep the game tied.
Burt then matched Desjardins with a big save of her own minutes later, denying Mottau a clear scoring chance with a pad save on the rush.
With less than nine minutes remaining in the third, the Eagles seized control of the game for good. After a BC faceoff win in the offensive zone, Skarupa drifted to the high slot, before unleashing a hard wrister into the corner of the net to make it 2-1 Eagles with 8:31 remaining.
Anastos then tacked on an empty-netter with 24 ticks to play to cement the victory for Boston College.
Northeastern will look to bounce back Friday when Providence pays a visit to Matthews Arena for a 7 p.m. contest.
