Season StatsBROOKLINE, Mass. – Boston College cast a shadow over the Northeastern baseball team's 2015 home opener on Tuesday afternoon as the Eagles registered 22 hits en route to a 22-1 victory against the Huskies.
Â
Third baseman
Nolan Lang notched his fifth multi-hit game of the year by going three-for-four from the plate. The freshman from Orlando, Florida, snapped a three-game hitless streak, posting three hits in a single game for the first time since March 14 against Wagner.
Â
Northeastern (7-13, 0-3 CAA) tallied just five hits on the day and left seven runners on base, four fewer than Boston College (7-13, 1-7 ACC).
Â
Co-captain
Josh Treff extended his hit streak to four consecutive games with a single coming during the third inning, and finished the day going one-for-three.
Gabe Levanti went one-for-four in the batter's box, while
Pat Madigan improved his reached-base streak to 16 consecutive games after being hit by a pitch in the eighth inning.
Â
Eleven different BC batters recorded at least one hit during the game, most notably right fielder Chris Shaw, who hit two home runs during his first two at-bats. Shaw, Michael Strem, and Anthony Maselli each ended the game with five RBIs and combined for seven hits and five of the Eagles' 11 extra-base hits.
Â
Shaw awarded Boston College an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after hitting a two-run home run to left field off NU starting pitcher
Isaac Lippert. Johnny Adams scored on an RBI single by Michael Strem to put BC up, 3-0, in the top of the third before Shaw homered again, extending the Eagles' lead to 5-0.
Â
Northeastern center fielder
Mason Koppens reached base in the bottom of the third on a fielder's choice and advanced to second base on a wild pitch thrown by BC starter John Gorman. Two batters later, the freshman outfielder scored on an RBI single by Treff, cutting Boston College's lead to 6-1 after three frames.
Â
BC would go on to score three more runs during the fourth inning to take a commanding 9-1 advantage and a defensive error by the Huskies in the fifth allowed another run to cross the plate, increasing the Eagles' lead to 10-1.
Â
NU would put two runners on base during a rally in the bottom of the fifth, but the Huskies could not bring them home after Treff was called out on an infield fly, and
Michael Foster struck out looking.
Â
A pinch-hit grand slam by Boston College's Anthony Maselli in the eighth inning lowered Northeastern's hopes of a comeback and helped fuel a nine-run rally by the Eagles that saw BC break the 20-run mark for the first time since 2003. The Huskies would concede another run during the ninth as NU dropped its first home game of the year, 22-1.
Â
Northeastern returns to Friedman Diamond on Wednesday, March 25, for a 3 p.m. game against UMass Lowell.
Brian Christian (0-0, 1.69 ERA) will make his second career start for the Huskies.
