Season StatsKINGSTON, R.I. – First-half goals by
Mackenzie Dowd and
Kayla Cappuzzo propelled the Northeastern women's soccer team (6-2-0) to a 2-0 victory over Rhode Island (3-3-1) on Sunday at the URI Soccer Complex.
Dowd scored the eventual game-winner on a penalty kick at the 25:58 mark, before Cappuzzo doubled the lead with a pretty solo effort just over 12 minutes later.Â
Redshirt sophomore
Jill Quinn and freshman
Nathalie Nidetch combined for the clean-sheet as NU earned its third straight victory over the Rams.
Goal Recaps
• Dowd put the Huskies ahead 1-0 in the 26th minute on her second career penalty kick goal. After Cappuzzo was dragged down in the box, Dowd stepped up and drilled the spot-kick inside the left post to give the visitors the lead.
• Cappuzzo then potted a goal of her own at the 38:15 mark. Following a sprint down the right wing, Cappuzzo lashed a shot on target that was stopped by URI keeper Katie Nickles. Nickles could not control the rebound, however, and Cappuzzo finished the play with a snipe inside the left post to double the advantage.
Stats of the Game
• Nidetch set a new collegiate high with four stops, including a brilliant fingertip save with 20 minutes remaining.
• NU outshot URI, 9-6, and out-cornered the Rams by a 6-1 margin. The Huskies have attempted more corners than their opponent in all eight matches this season.
