InfographicBROOKLINE, Mass. – Despite being backed by a six-save performance by sophomore goalkeeper
Jonathan Thuresson, an early second-half goal by New Hampshire proved to be the difference in the match as the Northeastern men's soccer lost a 1-0 decision to the Wildcats on Tuesday night.
Â
Making his return to the NU starting lineup, forward
Frantzdy Pierrot attempted two shots, landing one on goal during the 16th minute.
Khesanio Hall followed suit with two shots of his own, while
Khori Bennett,
Alex Reissmann, and
Mike Lobben each registered one shot during the evening.
Â
Although Northeastern (0-4-2) led New Hampshire (6-0-1) in corners, 6-5, strong defensive play by the Wildcats limited the Huskies to just seven shots. UNH posted 19 shots during the game, including eight on goal, the most NU has faced during the 2015 season.
Â
Riley Ellis netted the lone goal of the match for New Hampshire in the 48th minute, finishing the second of two shots sent Thuresson's way from the top of the box. Fazal Nabi led the Wildcats with eight shots, four on goal, while Chris Arling, Chris Wingate, and Ben Ramin each tallied more than two shots apiece.
Â
Bennett had a chance to put the Huskies on the scoreboard early in the eighth minute, ripping a shot from 25 yards out that ultimately traveled high. Shortly after,
Andrew Lombard helped chase down Nabi inside Northeastern's defensive box, causing his resulting shot to sail wide right past the net.
Â
Creating space around the left corner of the box, Pierrot found a shooting lane and directed a shot at the UNH goalkeeper, Ryan Carpenter, who secured the ball for his first of two saves during the game. Outside of a late NU corner kick taken by
Kevin Carvalho, New Hampshire was able to gain control of the match tempo, attempting nine shots during the final 25 minutes of the first half.
Â
Less than three minutes into the second half, the Wildcats successfully discovered a way around Thuresson. Ramin forced the Northeastern goalkeeper out of position with a shot from the left side, allowing Ellis to clean up the deflection from the top of the box.
Â
Shots were difficult to come by late in the match for the Huskies as Lobben curled Northeastern's only shot on goal of the half in the 81st minute.
Â
New Hampshire was able to maintain its defensive intensity, earning its fourth consecutive shutout of the 2015 season.
Â
Northeastern will open its CAA schedule on Saturday, Sept. 26, with a 7 p.m. match against No. 22 UNCW.
