BOSTON – Despite a school record 3-pointers, the Northeastern men's basketball team fell 96-92, in a hard fought triple overtime battle with Hofstra at Matthews Arena Thursday night.
Â
The triple OT game was just the second in school history, the other coming in the 1982 NCAA tournament against Villanova.
The 92 points were the most since scoring 95 against William & Mary in a double overtime win on Jan. 23, 2012.Â
 Â
Northeastern connected on a school record 17 threes in the game, 11 of those in regulation, and five coming from the hands of redshirt senior Caleb Donnelly. The Huskies tied the school record of 14 treys earlier this season against Delaware (Jan. 7).
Â
Donnelly finished the game with 15 points, all coming from downtown. Northeastern was led by Zach Stahl and Quincy Ford who each had 19 points, Stahl also added 11 rebounds for his fourth career double-double and his second of the season. Ford added five rebounds, a couple steals and a block.
Â
David Walker also finished with a double-double via 18 points and a career-high 13 assists playing all 55 minutes of game action for Northeastern. The double-double was his second career, second of the season, and the first via points and assists. Walker becomes just the third CAA player with a 10+ assist game this season.
Â
Northeastern headed into halftime down 10 points, despite 7-of-14 shooting from behind the arc. Hofstra connected on 8-of-14 from deep, and finished the first half with 15 baskets to Northeastern's 12.
Â
After entering halftime down 10 points, the Huskies tied things up with 10:54 remaining in the second half on a Stahl layup using a 6-0 run, with all the points coming from the senior forward.
Â
Hofstra quickly regained an eight-point advantage, which the Huskies chipped away at via a Ford trey, and a Stahl layup, and the Huskies tied the game behind a Walker layup with 19 seconds remaining.
Â
Northeastern shot 4-of-8 from behind the arc while they shut the Pride out from deep in the second half, holding Hofstra to just 23 second-half points, a season best for Northeastern.
Â
Hofstra gained a quick four-point advantage in the first overtime period, but once again the Huskies answered, and back-to-back layups by Ford and Stahl evened the score and sent the game to the second OT period.
Â
This time the Huskies jumped out to a four-point lead behind back-to-back treys by Caleb Donnelly, but Hofstra answered back and tied the ball game up at 87-all with 1:22 left, where it would remain entering the third extra time period.
Â
A minute and a half into the third OT, Hofstra once again had a four-point lead, but once again the Huskies fought back. However, with the ball in the Huskies' hands, an official timeout was called with the ball in play to check and see if Northeastern's first attempt at a game winner hit the rim with 9.1 seconds remaining and the Pride up 93-92.
Â
After determining the shot did hit the rim, Northeastern turned the ball over, taking too long to inbound, and Hofstra got a chance to build a four-point lead and go on for the win.
Â
The Huskies are back in action on Saturday when they continue their homestand against Towson at Matthews Arena at 1 p.m.
