BOSTON – Freshman goaltender Ryan Ruck made a career-high 31 saves, but the Northeastern men's hockey team (9-13-4) was unable to dig itself out of an early two-goal deficit as the No. 9 Boston University Terriers (15-7-4) skated to a 3-1 win on Monday in the Beanpot Semifinals before a crowd of 14,832 at TD Garden.

Junior John Stevens scored an extra-attacker goal with 3:29 remaining to pull Northeastern within one, but the Terriers were able to salt the game away when Doyle Somerby scored into the empty net in the final minute to restore BU's two-goal cushion.

With the win, the Terriers advanced to the Beanpot championship game on Feb. 8 against Boston College, while the Huskies will face Harvard in next week's consolation game at 4:30 p.m.

Goal Recaps
• BU struck first at the 6:46 mark of the opening period when Robbie Baillargeon batted a Bobo Carpenter shot out of mid-air at the right of the NU net to make it 1-0 Terriers.
• Boston University doubled the advantage just over three minutes later when Danny O'Regan skated in on the right wing and dropped a pass to Charlie McAvoy for a shot that whistled over the blocker of Ruck from the top of the circle.
• With 3:29 to play in the third period, Northeastern pulled Ruck in favor of the extra attacker. The move paid dividends just 17 seconds later when Stevens whacked home a rebound in the crease following a point-shot by junior Matt Benning
• The Huskies would get no closer, however, as Somerby iced the game with an empty-net goal at the 19:20 mark to put the Terriers back in front by two.

Key Moments
• Ruck made several highlight-reel stops, including a blocker save on a Jordan Greenway breakaway in the opening minutes of the second period, and a sliding glove save on a Matt Lane one-timer later in the frame.
• Ruck made his best save of the night midway through the third when he reached back to pull the puck off the goal-line to deny an O'Regan attempt that would have made it 3-0.

Stats of the Game
• Ruck made a career-high 31 saves, surpassing his previous high of 30 against BU on Nov. 7 and UNH on Jan. 16.
John Stevens scored his fourth career Beanpot goal, including his second against BU.
• Stevens has scored in each of his last four Beanpot games, and has recorded at least a point in all five career Beanpot contests.
• NU scored its first extra-attacker goal of the season (first since Adam Reid on Jan. 2, 2015 vs. St. Lawrence).
• The second period marked the first scoreless frame between NU and BU in the Beanpot since the first period of the 2010 semifinals–a span of 10 periods across four games.
• Senior Kevin Roy was held off the scoresheet in the Beanpot for the first time in his career.
• Boston University held a 34-25 advantage in shots on goal.
• BU went 0-for-2 on the power play, while NU went 0-for-1.
