Postgame PresserHARRISONBURG, Va. –
Quincy Ford tallied the most points by any Northeastern men's basketball player against a Colonial Athletic Association conference foe and the Huskies defeated James Madison 95-94 in triple overtime Thursday night.
Â
Ford finished the night with 36 points, the most since Jose Juan Barea had 41 against Stony Brook on March 5, 2005 and a career-high for the redshirt senior. The 36 points are tied for the ninth most in a single game in NU history.
Â
Nineteen of those 36 points came during the overtime periods, including a clutch three points to begin the third overtime. Ford was fouled shooting a three to begin the frame and easily sank his three free throw attempts to give the Huskies a lead that James Madison would unable to overcome.
Â
Ford was aided by
David Walker, who finished with 19 points, and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Walker, however, did not hit from behind the arc as his 31-game 3-point shooting streak came to a close.
Â
Jeremy Miller also added a double-digit effort with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including five clutch points to tie the game in regulation and in the first overtime period.
Â
After calling his final timeout of regulation, Head Coach
Bill Coen drew up a play that left Miller wide open in the corner to tie the game at 58-all with 18 seconds left to play. In the first overtime, with seven seconds left on the clock,
Donnell Gresham Jr. found Miller in the lane and his layup forced double overtime.
Â
That assist was one of four for Gresham, who also finished with eight points and 10 rebounds, his first double-digit rebounding effort of his young career.
Â
Gresham's other clutch assist came on a laser pass through three defenders to a streaking Ford in the paint in the second OT period, which gave the Huskies an 81-80 lead with 17 seconds left on the clock. Ford's free throw completed the and-one and gave Northeastern a two-point edge as Ron Curry spun in the paint for the game-tying lay up on the other end.
Â
Curry, who returned to play against the Huskies after sitting out James Madison's last game, finished with 21 points and seven assists. Yohanny Dalembert lead the Dukes with 26 points and 10 boards.
Â
All 13 of Northeastern's points in the third overtime period came from the charity stripe where the Huskies were 13-for-15 in the fifth stanza of the game. After going 3-for-6 in the first half from the free throw line, Northeastern missed just one free throw in the second half and first two overtime periods going 19-for-20 during that time. Northeastern finished a season-high 35-of-41 from the line.
Â
Â
After a back-and-forth first half, James Madison had a chance to extend a 26-21 lead heading to the locker room. However, after Curry stepped out of bounds trying to extend the lead with three seconds left at the end of the first half, Ford completed the task for the Huskies knocking down a three with less than a second on the shot clock to cut the lead to 26-24 at the half. Â
Â
Northeastern tied the game early in the second half and went on a 7-0 run that was matched, and bested, by a 12-0 run by the Dukes. But the Huskies fought back and tied the game on the Miller trey with time winding down forcing overtime.
Â
The Huskies return to the court this weekend on Sunday afternoon when they face Hofstra on the road in an NBC Sports nationally televised game at 2 p.m.
