Postgame Presser featuring the senior classBOSTON – After being iced twice at the free throw line, first as the officials dried the floor and, after making the game tying free throw, subsequently by the Charleston coaching staff,
Quincy Ford knocked down the game-winning free throw with 4.7 seconds left in the ball game to give the Northeastern men's basketball team a 58-57 victory over Charleston Thursday night on Senior Night at Matthews Arena.
Â
Ford was fouled driving on the game winning basket, and calmly knocked down two pressure free throws to leave Matthews, for the final time, with a win.
Â
The win was key, as the Huskies improved to a tie for sixth place in the CAA with Charleston. Both teams now have 8-9 conference records this season. Northeastern improved to 16-14 overall while Charleston dropped to 16-12. A win Saturday, coupled with a Charleston loss would give the Huskies a first round bye in the CAA Tournament.
The win also signified head coach
Bill Coen's 100
th career CAA regular season victory in his 10 seasons at the helm of the Northeastern program.Â
Â
Ford finished with nine points on the night to go along with nine rebounds. The Huskies were led by another senior,
Zach Stahl who finished with 15 points. Stahl's 14
th point, coming on a free throw, made him the 36
th Northeastern basketball player to become a part of the 1,000-point club.
Â
Senior
Caleb Donnelly finished with 12 points and was 3-of-5 from long range including one that finished in a four-point play while senior
David Walker finished with eight points, six rebounds and two assists.
Â
Freshman
Jeremy Miller finished with 10 points including a clutch three-point play in the waning minutes.
Â
Charleston had three double-digit scorers, led by Jarrell Brantley who finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds on the night.
Â
Neither team could get hot early on in the first half as Charleston started the game off 2-of-14 from the field, while the Huskies were 2-of-10 through the first eight minutes of play.
Â
The Huskies notched their first two buckets quickly, building up an early five-point lead, beginning with a
Zach Stahl layup and following up with a trey from the corner from
Jeremy Miller.
Â
But Charleston chipped away slowly and tied the ball game up on a James Bourne free throw at nine-all with 8:11 left in the first half. The lead changed four times and the two teams exchanged ties two more times in the first half.
Â
Momentum shifted in Northeastern's favor when a driving
T.J. Williams found a wide open
Caleb Donnelly at the top of the arc who made the basket, and was fouled in the process, ultimately completing the elusive four-point play.
David Walker followed that trey up with one of his own and the Huskies entered the locker room at halftime with a 23-19 lead. Â
Â
Charleston erased that lead early in the second half, making it a 26-26 ballgame on a dunk by Nick Harris. What followed was four more ties and eight more lead changes until the Huskies took their largest lead of the ball game, 50-44, using Stahl's two historic free throws with 4:19 left in the game.
Â
Charleston edged closer, but Miller's three-point play once again gave the Huskies the edge. Back-to-back Cougar layups made it a two-point game, but Ford drilled a three to give the Huskies a five-point advantage.
Â
The Cougars used back-to-back Cameron Johnson jumpers to take a one-point lead with 23 seconds left in the ball game, before Ford knocked down his free throw tries to seal the victory.
Â
Northeastern will finish out the regular season Saturday afternoon when they head to the City of Brotherly Love for a meeting with Drexel at 4 p.m.Â
