PHILADELPHIA – Nearly 79 minutes into the game, Drexel ended things with an overtime gamewinner defeating the Northeastern field hockey team 2-1 in the team's conference opener Friday night.
 
Laura MacLachlan netted the Huskies lone goal on the day while 
Becky Garner made eight saves on the night for Northeastern (5-5, 0-1 CAA).
Jessica McCarthy notched two goals on the day for Drexel, including the game winner while Erin Gilchrist tallied seven saves for the Dragons (6-5, 1-0).
 
Northeastern got on the board first in the 26
th minute of action as 
Laura MacLachlan tallied her fifth goal of the season utilizing the Huskies fifth penalty corner opportunity of the half.
 
Axelle Dewamme started the goal off inserting the ball to 
Natalie Stewart, who stopped it perfectly for MacLachlan who turned and whacked the ball from the top of the circle into the right side of the cage for the score. The assist was the seventh of the season for Stewart and the second of the year for Dewamme.
 
Stewart has now tallied an assist in five straight games, while Dewamme has registered back-to-back games with a helper.
 
Drexel answered back just a couple of minutes later when Jessica McCarthy notched her third goal of the season to even the score at one-all heading into the half.
 
After neither team scored in the second half of play, the Huskies headed to their fifth overtime game of the season.
 
Northeastern staved off a couple of Drexel attacks, but on the Dragons' third try of the period, McCarthy backhanded home the game-winner past Garner 78:59 into the game.  
 
Northeastern returns home on Sunday where they will open at three-game homestand against Dartmouth. Sunday's game will be Community Day in Dedham and will begin at 2 p.m.
 
Prior to the match, the Huskies will host a skill development clinic open to any and all middle and high school players. At the game, the first 200 fans to attend will receive a Northeastern field hockey blanket.
